Karly Buer (left) and Sheana Vega will join the Liberty women's basketball team for the 2014-15 season.
Liberty head women's basketball coach Carey Green announced that guards Sheana Vega and Karly Buer have signed to attend Liberty University for the 2014-15 academic year. Vega will be an incoming freshman for the Lady Flames after graduating from Jackson Memorial High School in Jackson, N.J. Meanwhile, Buer will play her final season of college basketball at Liberty in 2014-15, after completing her undergraduate studies at Missouri State. Vega and Buer will join Candice Leatherwood (G, 5-7, Detroit, Mich.) as new members of the Lady Flames' backcourt this coming season. Leatherwood, who signed a national letter of intent in November, led Farmington Hills Mercy High School to a school-record 25 wins and a berth in the Detroit Class A state semifinals as a senior.
Sheana Vega (G, 5-9, Jackson, N.J.) Vega closed out her prep career with a strong senior campaign at Jackson Memorial High School. The Jaguars' primary point guard, she averaged 16.0 ppg, 7.4 rpg and 5.6 apg while knocking down 57 three-pointers. As a result, Vega was named to the All-Shore Conference Team and invited to play in the NJSCA Senior North-South All-Star Game. As a junior at Jackson Liberty High School, Vega set the program record for steals in a season. She totaled 1,034 career points during her four years of high school basketball, while shooting 87 percent from the foul line. A member of the National Honor Society, Vega chose Liberty over Rider, Bucknell, Lehigh, Grambling and others because, "I knew in my heart this is where God wanted me to be. He opened up the door for me. I was welcomed with open arms and became part of the family from the second I met the coaching staff and stepped foot on campus. I am blessed to be able to grow spiritually and as a Christian student-athlete. There is no university like Liberty."
What They're Saying about Sheana Vega "We are very excited to have Sheana as a part of the Liberty family. On the court, Sheana brings an infectious energy, athleticism and a work ethic devoted to reaching goals. She has the ability to knock down three-pointers and attack the basket, but I am most eager to have Sheana's commitment on the defensive end push our program to another level. She is a quality young lady with strong character and Christian values, who is a perfect fit in our program." Carey Green, Liberty Head Women's Basketball Coach
"Sheana's passion and love for the game is contagious. There is never a bad day when Sheana has a ball in her hand. Her love for this game is incredible. Great things happen when she is on the court. Whether it be her passion to compete or her extreme pride to play the game she loves, great things are accomplished." Rachel Goodale, Varsity Girls' Basketball Coach at Jackson Memorial High School Karly Buer (G, 5-7, Concordia, Kan.) Buer had appeared in 103 consecutive games to begin her career at Missouri State before suffering a season-ending knee injury in November. After receiving a medical redshirt and enrolling in Liberty's graduate program in sport management (outdoor adventure sport), Buer will complete her final season of eligibility as a Lady Flame in 2014-15. "After I tore my ACL in November of my senior season, every outcome of my injury, through God's guidance, directed me to finish my playing career and pursue my master's degree at this one-of-a-kind school," Buer explained. "Through God's grace and his will over my life, this incredible opportunity, that I would have thought impossible, opened for me. I am excited to be a part of this team, where we will fight to sustain the winning tradition at Liberty University." Buer finished her time at Missouri State ranked 37th on the Lady Bears' all-time scoring list with 773 points. She also ranks eighth in program history for free throw percentage (.831), highlighted by a school-record .907 clip for the 2012-13 season. Buer's 64 three-pointers for her career rank 18th on Missouri State's all-time list, while her 208 assists rank 24th. A berth on the 2011 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) All-Freshman Team was the first of Buer's numerous accolades at Missouri State. She was the MVC Player of the Week on Feb. 6, 2012 and a two-time MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team honoree (2012 and 2013). Buer also made three appearances on the MVC Academic Honor Roll (2011, 2012 and 2013) and earned the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award twice (2012 and 2013). Buer was additionally the back-to-back winner (2011 and 2012) of the Lady Bear Prestige Award, given to the player exhibiting the most desire, determination and dedication on the Missouri State team. Buer helped Missouri State post back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2010-11 and 2011-12, including a MVC regular-season title in 2011-12. That came on the heels of a successful career at Concordia High School, which saw Buer's team win 51 straight games between the 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns. Her 2009 squad captured the Kansas Class 4A state title with a perfect 26-0 record. Buer graduated as Concordia's career leader in points (1,557), assists (444) and steals (293).
What They're Saying about Karly Buer "What an amazing blessing and story it is to have such a quality, skilled athlete with strong character attributes join our Liberty family. Karly is best described as having an intense passion to excel while possessing a great work ethic, which is a great combination! She has an infectious personality and passion that influences others to compete and achieve at the highest championship level. She is an excellent defender and has an attacking scoring punch from all over the court as a combo guard. We are thankful to welcome Karly into our sisterhood of Champions for Christ."
