Murray Leads Decathlon After Day One Of ASICS Collegiate Invitational

Liberty junior Clarence Murray leads the decathlon by 153 points through five events at the ASICS Collegiate Invitational, highlighting Friday's initial day of action at the Matthes-Hopkins Track & Field Complex. 

Murray (Birdsboro, Pa.) moved into first place with solid efforts in the day's final two disciplines, the high jump and the 400-meter dash, pushing his score to 3,334. His high jump clearance of 6-1.5 led all competitors and his 400 time of 51.14 ranked second, behind only teammate Daniel Newell's (So., Roanoke, Va.) 49.59. 

Jim Swiech of Roberts Wesleyan currently sits in second place, with 3,181 points. The Flames' Joel Beck (Fr., Leola, Pa.) is third after compiling 3,118 first-day points. Newell, Liberty's final entrant in the decathlon, posted 2,853 points and resides in sixth. 

On the women's side, Liberty's Sheronica Henton (Fr., Raeford, N.C.) recorded the best shot put of the 11 heptathletes, 38-4. She is currently fifth with 2,359 points. Teammate Jenn Ward (Jr., Martinsville, Va.) is listed 10th through four events after totaling 1,924 points. Pittsburgh's Mycaiah Clemons owns a 175-point edge over Roanoke College's Meredith Withers for first place, after tallying 2,886 points. 

The meet's second day of competition will kick off at 10 a.m. Saturday. The decathlon 110-meter hurdles and the women's pole vault will be the first two events to get underway.
