Match Play Effort Yields BSC Honors for Lindstrom

After posting two individual victories at Saturday's Liberty University Match Play Invitational, Flames senior golfer Niklas Lindstrom has been named this week's Big South Men's Golfer of the Week.

Lindstrom helped the Flames also post two team victories during their first home event since 2009. The Flames defeated George Mason, 5&1, during the morning and 4&2 over James Madison during the afternoon flight.

Lindstrom posted one of several sizeable wins over Patriot golfers during the morning, defeating George Mason's Zack Lauzon, 5&4, thanks to three birdies during his 14 holes of play.

During the afternoon, Lindstrom helped the Flames fend off a late charge from James Madison as he won his match against Jon Weiss, 3&1.

After Weiss tied the match up on the No. 10 hole at Poplar Grove Golf Club in Amherst, Va., Lindstrom birdied back-to-back holes (par-3, No. 13 and par-4, No. 14) to regain a lead he would never relinquish.

Following the pair of wins, Lindstrom is now 5-1 during his collegiate career in match play events He posted a 3-1 record in four matches played at the 2012 Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship (in Bradenton, Fla. – March 18-19, 2012).

The weekly award marks the second time the Kalmar, Sweden, native has been named Big South Men's Golf of the Week this season and the sixth time in his Liberty career.

Lindstrom ranks second on Liberty's roster and third in the Big South Conference with a 73.00 stroke average. He has three top five finishes this season and has played a team-best 12 rounds at par or better.

Lindstrom and the Flames will close out the regular season portion of their 2013-14 schedule this weekend when they travel Columbus, Ohio, for the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Ohio State at its own Ohio State Golf Course.
