Charleston Southern Records 10-1 Win Over Lady Flames

Charleston Southern posted a 10-1 victory over Liberty, during the first game of a twin bill, Monday at Liberty Softball Field.

The Buccaneers improve to 19-20-1 on the season, evening their conference record at 5-5. The Lady Flames are now 4-27, with an 0-8 Big South mark.

Cheyenne Gandara (7-7) scattered six hits over five innings, allowing one run and striking out four batters.

Grace Nordan (1-1) drew the loss, allowing six runs, five earned on two hits while walking four. Annah Jo Brittingham pitched the final four innings of the game, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits with three strikeouts.

For CSU, Jessica Brock batted 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, while Stephanie Sbardella went 1-for-2 with a double and three RBIs. Stephanie Bergmann went 2-for-3 with a double, while Amanda Matsumoto scored three runs.

Kelby Allen batted 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Lady Flames. Sammi Shivock hit 1-for-2 with one RBI and one stolen base.

The Buccaneers scored two runs before an out was recorded in the game, as Matsumoto reached on an error in front of Brock's two-run blast to left center. Nordan worked around a walk, keeping the score 2-0.

CSU added four tallies in the top of the second, loading the bases with nobody out. After Nordan walked in a run, DiMartino came on to face three batters. The senior reliever ended up allowing all three inherited runners to score, via a hit, hit by pitch and walk. Brittingham then entered the circle and struck out the next three batters in order, stopping the rally.

Following a scoreless Liberty second inning, the visitors scored twice in the third, capitalizing on two two-out errors. Matsumoto and Brock both reached on errors, and Sbardella then hit a two-run double, making it 8-0, CSU.

Charleston Southern boosted its lead to double figures, 10-0, with two fourth-inning tallies. Lizzy Olmstead singled and Brandy Galaviz doubled. Bergmann and Ari Tedesco both came through with RBI doubles, good for a 10-0 advantage.

Liberty entered the scoring column by manufacturing a run in the bottom of the fourth. Allen led off with a single, and advanced to third on a throwing error. With one out, Shivock sent Allen home with a single to center.

Brittingham pitched a 1-2-3 fifth, bringing the Lady Flames to the plate for the final time. Lawrence hit a one-out single, and Robinson was hit by a pitch just before an infield single by Allen loaded the bases with two outs. Gandara got Hanna Nichols to fly out, ending the 10-1 game after five innings.
