Longwood scored four times in the second, and added five in the fifth, on the way to a 9-1 victory over Liberty during game two on Thursday at Lancer Field. The Lancers are now 15-5, 4-0 in Big South play with the doubleheader sweep, and Longwood has won eight games in a row. Liberty falls to 2-23 on the campaign, 0-5 against conference opponents. Libby Morris (6-3) pitched a complete-game two-hitter, yielding one unearned run, while posting a career-high nine strikeouts. Liberty starter Annah Jo Brittingham (1-13) drew the loss allowing four runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. Alyssa DiMartino pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, yielding four earned runs on four hits. Emily Murphy batted 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Casey Lifsey batted 1-for-2 with a homer and three RBIs. Taylor Hedrick hit 2-for-3, hitting a triple and driving in two. Kelby Allen and Hanna Nichols both went 1-for-2, while Allen drove in her team-best 14th run. Katie Zavodny scored Liberty's lone run. The Lady Flames put a pair of runners on base in the top of the second, as Nichols singled and Morris plunked Kassidy McCoy. Morris then struck out Katie Han and got Grace Nordan to ground to third for the final out. Longwood staged a two-out rally, scoring four runs in its ensuing at bat. A Hedrick single and a walk to Justina Augustine set up a three-run blast to left by Lifsey. Murphy singled to center, and Adams made it 4-0 with an RBI double to center. DiMartino came on in relief of Brittingham, and retired the next batter to end the stanza. Zavodny reached on a two-base throwing error with one out in the top of the third. Allen bounded a two-out single to center, sending Zavodny home with Liberty's first run. DiMartino then faced just three batters in Longwood's half of the third inning, as Katie Shinrock was erased on the basepaths on a steal attempt. Morris added two strikeouts to her total during a scoreless Liberty fourth, and DiMartino tossed a 1-2-3 bottom half of the frame. Following a three-batter fifth for Liberty, the Lancers ended the game with five runs in the bottom half of the frame. Chelsea Sciacca walked with the bases loaded, and Longwood increased its lead to 7-1 when Shinrock reached on an error. A two-run triple by Hedrick ended the game, with the Lancers winning, 9-1. The Lady Flames return home, where they will host North Carolina Central in a weekend series, Friday and Saturday. Liberty and N.C. Central will meet at 4 p.m. on Friday, before contesting a doubleheader on Saturday, with game one set to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday's games will be held in conjunction with Liberty Athletics' Play 4 Kay day, raising funds and awareness for the fight against women's cancers.
