The Liberty men's tennis team looks to bounce back from a pair of recent setbacks when it faces Coker on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Saturday's contest is the first of three matches the Flames will play in the Palmetto state during next week's spring break.
Liberty fell in its last two outings this past weekend, dropping its record to 4-6 overall for the season. The Flames lost at home to Richmond on Friday, 5-2, before falling at current No. 2 and defending national champion Virginia, 10-0, on Sunday.
Liberty and Coker have faced each other once before, with the Flames winning, 8-1, on March 10, 2012, in Hartsville, S.C. A trio of current Liberty players, Shea Thomas, Jorge Azuero and Dillon Segur, each competed during the first meeting, with all three earning singles wins. Thomas also notched a doubles victory during the match.
The Flames are led in singles play by Egon Samaai's six victories this spring. The sophomore is also a team-best 4-2 in doubles matches with Segur. Thomas, who currently sits in second place on Liberty's career singles and doubles listings, is second on the squad with five singles wins and three doubles victories with Azuero. Alejandro Llamas and Azuero are tied for third with four singles wins each. The Flames are a combined 26-33 in singles tilts and 12-16 in doubles contests.
Coker enters the weekend with a 2-4 overall record and a No. 36 national ranking in Division II. Liberty will be the second Big South opponent the Cobras have faced this season. On February 9, Coker fell on the road at Winthrop, 4-0. A trio of Cobras, Martin Moncayo, Tom Sizeland, Andre Staab, have four singles wins each to pace the team. James Corfield and Staab have a team-best three doubles victories in the No. 1 position.
Liberty continues its South Carolina road trip with a neutral-site contest versus James Madison on March 13. The match will take place in Hilton Head and is set to begin at 10 a.m.
