Liberty ran its winning streak to three matches with a pair of victories last weekend. It is the second three-match run for the Lady Flames this season, matching their 3-0 spurt to open the season. On Friday, Liberty knocked off Morgan State, 6-1, improving to 4-0 all-time against the Bears. The Lady Flames followed up the Friday win with a come-from-behind 4-3 ousting of Campbell on Saturday in the Big South opener for both squads. The two wins improve Liberty's record to 6-2 (1-0 Big South) overall for the season, its best start in program history.
For the season, Maria Khval is a team-best 7-1 in singles play and 4-1 in doubles contests with partner Rebekah Jenkins. Belen Rivera and Nicola Wellman are tied for second on the team with five singles wins apiece. The Lady Flames are 13-6 overall as a unit in doubles contests this season. Liberty is undefeated so far this season when winning the doubles point to start a match. In singles play, the Lady Flames are a combined 31-17 as a team.
Liberty is 5-13 all-time against the Chanticleers and 3-11 versus the Buccaneers. The Lady Flames won both meetings with Coastal last season, including a 4-1 victory in the quarterfinals of the Big South Women's Tennis Championship. Liberty's last win over Charleston Southern came on March 19, 2011, when the Lady Flames knocked off the Buccaneers, 4-3, in Lynchburg.
Saturday's match will serve as the Big South opener for the Chanticleers (8-1). Coastal is a perfect 5-0 at home this season, dropping just three points overall through those five matches. Amanda Malatek and Honami Yazawa lead the team, which is a combined 44-10 in singles play, with 7-1 records each. In doubles play, the Chanticleers are an impressive 21-3 as a team. Yazawa and Kourtney Kowal pace the squad with a 6-1 singles mark, which includes an unblemished 6-0 tally in the No. 1 position.
Charleston Southern is 3-3 so far this season and plays at Columbia (S.C.) today before hosting the Lady Flames in its Big South opener on Sunday. The Buccaneers are 17-18 in singles contests and 7-9 in doubles tilts this year as a team. Yvonne Hubler is a team-best 4-2 in singles matches, while also leading the team in doubles wins (3) with partner Alexandra Walters.
