National recognition continues to come in for the 2013 Big South champion Liberty women's soccer team. Following a season in which they finished with the most single-season wins in program history and an RPI of 68, the Lady Flames picked up two awards from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
The program was awarded the NSCAA Team Academic Award, recognizing exceptional academic performance as a team. The Lady Flames currently have a 3.3599 cumulative GPA after posting an APR score of 990 out of 1,000 in the 2012-13 academic year.
Liberty was also awarded the NSCAA Team Ethics Award of Merit, an honor given to teams for their fair and ethical play on the field of competition. Head Coach Jessica Hain's squad picked up zero red cards and just three yellow cards during its 23 games in 2013.
"These are two exciting honors that we are humbled to have been recognized for," Hain commented. "We are blessed at Liberty to have one of the finest academic support staffs anywhere in the country, who have done a tremendous job of helping our ladies achieve in the classroom while they juggle the very difficult task of being a student-athlete. We are very proud of the girls for that, and for the way they represent Jesus Christ and Liberty University on the field of competition."
In addition to the team awards, assistant coach Adam Godwin recently completed his NSCAA Premier Diploma, the highest level of coaching diploma offered by the organization. Impressed by his performance during the coaching course, the NCSAA invited Godwin onto the NSCAA National Staff to assist in other coaching courses around the country with future candidates. "I was really humbled and surprised by the offer, it certainly wasn't something I was expecting," Godwin said. "But I am excited to have the opportunity to help instruct other coaches as we continue to look to raise the bar of soccer in this country."
The 2013 Big South Champions are currently in spring practice and will begin their spring schedule on March 20, when they host fellow Big South foe Longwood at 7 p.m. inside Osborne Stadium.
