Before the team departed for Florida earlier this week, Liberty Flames Sports Network reporter Alan York had a chance to catch up with Liberty's Chase Marinell and Niklas Lindstrom.
The pair of seniors helped the Flames claim the team title at the Sea Best Invitational last week, the program's 23rd NCAA Division I team title. Liberty finished the tournament tied with North Florida, but was declared the victor based upon its final day score.
Lindstrom finished the tournament, which was played at the famed TPC Sawgrass – THE PLAYERS Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., tied for third place with a two-over par 218 (71-74-73). The top five finish earned the Kalmar, Sweden, native Big South Player of the Week honors, the fifth weekly conference honor of his career.
Marinell is Liberty's top rated golfer, who leads the team with a 72.57 stroke average and has posted three top five finishes in five starts during the 2013-14 season. The Fort Myers, Fla., native was named Golfweek's Player to Watch in the Big South this spring.
Following their victory at the Sea Best Invitational, Liberty moved up to No. 24 in the country in the latest Golfstat rankings and No. 35 in the most recent Golfweek rankings. Liberty's No. 24 Golfstat rankings marks the program's highest ranking in that listing.
Liberty returns to the "Sunshine State" this weekend to participate in the Gator Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played on Florida's home course, the Mark Bostick Golf Course, in Gainesville, Fla.
