Golfweek Big South Conference Preview
As part of its January conference previews, Golfweek named Liberty's Chase Marinell as the "Player to Watch" this spring in the Big South Conference, while the Flames topped the website's preview of the league.
Marinell is coming off his best fall season at Liberty, leading the Flames with a 72.17 stroke average. The senior posted three top 10 finishes in the Flames' four fall tournaments. The Fort Myers, Fla., native enters the spring individually ranked No. 60 in the country by Golfstat and No. 71 by Golfweek.
Four of Liberty's five starters during the fall posted a 74.00 or better stroke average, including seniors Marinell, Niklas Lindstrom (73.83) and Ian McConnell (74.00). The fourth member of the group is junior Mathieu Fenasse (73.33), who was the medalist at last year's Big South Men's Golf Championship.
Golfweek also picked the Flames to win the Big South, which would be the program's third title in the last four years. Liberty won its first two Big South titles in 2011 and 2012.
The conference championship event will once again be contested at The Patriot Golf Club in Ninety-Six, S.C. The course is where Liberty won both its conference titles and has hosted the league championship event eight out of the last nine years.
The Flames finished the fall season ranked No. 37 in the country by Golfstat and No. 36 by Golfweek. Liberty begins the spring portion of its 2013-14 schedule at the Sea Best Invitational, Feb. 3-4. The two-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Jacksonville at the famed TPC Sawgrass – Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
