USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Doubles Draw
The Liberty men's tennis duo of Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero look to continue their unprecedented fall campaign this week with an appearance in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
Thomas and Azuero earned their spot in the tournament by becoming the first Liberty doubles pair to win the ITA Atlantic Regional tournament title. The Flames' duo ousted four consecutive seeded pairs, including a win in the final match against the No. 17 team in the country and the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini of Virginia Tech.
Action gets under way tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with four round of 32 matches and one quarterfinal match. Thomas and Azuero received a first-round bye and will face the winner of No. 18 ranked David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury of Memphis and the 57th ranked team from Florida, Elliot Orkin and Gordon Watson.
A win would put Thomas and Azuero into the quarterfinals against the winner of the match between the top-ranked tandem in the nation from Tennessee, Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese, and Bjerrehus and Contini.
As the only tournament on the ITA calendar to showcase elite players from every level of college tennis, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall season. Hosted by Columbia, this prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women.
Gaining automatic entry into the tournament are champions from the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country in October, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl, and the consolation champions, doubles finalists, men's singles quarterfinalists and women's singles semifinalists from the ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships.
Live scoring for the tournament will be available on LibertyFlames.com by clicking on the live stats link on the men's tennis schedule/results page.
