Each week during the 2013 football season, the Liberty Flames Sports Network previews the Flames' upcoming gridiron matchup, continuing this week with a look at VMI.
VMI will face its fourth-consecutive Big South opponent this week, including its third straight on the road. VMI enters the game with a 1-7 record and a 0-3 mark in Big South play.
Liberty's game against the Keydets marks a current break in the series between the in-state programs. Following 10 seasons of competition in the Big South Conference, VMI will leave the Big South and return to the Southern Conference in all sports, starting next fall.
The Keydets have been without the services of quarterback Eric Kordenbrock since halftime of the Presbyterian College game on Oct. 19 due to an injury. He missed the entire game last week where VMI fell, 66-27, to No. 6/3 Coastal Carolina. Kordenbrock is the program's all-time career leader in completions (567), attempts (1,052) and passing yards (6,142). A.J. Augustine filled in for Kordenbrock last week, completing 19-of-30 passing attempts for 237 yards and two touchdowns.
VMI's defense is allowing 40.5 points per game and 506.5 total offensive yards per game. The Keydets rank No. 118 in the country in total defense and No. 115 in scoring defense (out of 122 FCS programs). Alex James leads VMI's defense and ranks third in the Big South with 69 total tackles (29 solo, 40 assisted).
The contest marks the return of Liberty football to television coverage on the Liberty Flames Sports Network, as well as ESPN3 and MASN. Pregame radio coverage will begin at 2:30 p.m. on the Liberty Flames Sports Network and the game will kick off at 3:37 p.m. from Williams Stadium.
