Forward Kyle Breitmeyer scored 7:18 into overtime, propelling the Liberty Flames past the Longwood Lancers, 2-1, Tuesday evening in a Big South Men's Soccer contest at Osborne Stadium.
After a long clearing pass up the left side to Blessing Tahuona, the midfielder sent a pass across the field to fellow midfielder Juan Nino. The senior moved the ball into the center of the field, beating a Lancer defender, and sending a pass into the 18-yard box near the right post. Breitmeyer took the ball in stride and pumped the game-winner into the left side of the net for his third goal of the season to give Liberty the victory. Liberty moves to 4-4 in Big South Conference play and 8-7 overall. The Flames won both of their contests this season, which have gone past regulation. Earlier this month, Liberty defeated Winthrop in a Big South match, 3-2, in the second overtime. Longwood drops to 5-2-1 in conference and 6-6-3 overall.
The host Flames jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead during the contest's eighth minute. After midfielder Jonatan Torres dropped a corner kick into the center of the box, Tahuona was able to push the ball towards the left post during a scramble in front. Midfielder Sachem Wilson pounced on the ball and scored his team-leading sixth goal of the year for a Liberty advantage.
The rest of the half saw solid defensive efforts by both sides. Neither team was able to get a shot on goal until the closing minute of the half. When a free kick by Flames' midfielder Tim Haribson bounced off a wall of Longwood defenders, midfielder Murphy Short picked up the rebound and lifted a shot, which Lancer goalkeeper Carlos Canas deflected away to keep the contest, 1-0, headed into halftime. Shots were even at four and corners at one each during the evenly played opening half. Liberty carried the possession in the early minutes of the second half. The Flames' pressure paid off in six unanswered shots. However, Liberty was not able to get a shot on goal, either pushing its attempts high or wide.
Longwood tied the match during the 63rd minute. Midfielder Jonathan Kukapa picked up a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and sent a pass out to fellow midfielder Phillip Berkom. The Lancer lifted a shot from 35 yards out for his third goal of the year, knotting the score at 1-1.
Liberty came close to taking an advantage for the second time in regulation during the 83rd minute. When a corner kick made it through the center of the box, defender Sam Duininck jumped on the loose ball and pushed a shot off the right post. Moments later, the Flames were called offside, relieving the pressure on the Lancer net.
Longwood took the first shot of the overtime period during the 93rd minute. Kukapa worked himself free for a shot near the top of the box, only to see it blocked down and cleared by the Liberty defense.
Liberty outshot Longwood, 14-7, in the contest, while corner kicks were even at 2-2.
Jeremy Lee played the entire 97:18 in the Flames goal without recording a save. Canas made one save for the Lancers.
Liberty next travels to Buies Creek, N.C. for their final road contest of the 2013 regular season on Saturday. The Flames will face the Campbell Camels in a Big South match. Game time at the Eakes Athletic Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
