A No. 2 seed is at stake on Tuesday, as the Liberty women's soccer team travels to Farmville, Va., to take on Longwood. The Lancers currently sit in second place in the Big South standings with 24 conference points, while Liberty follows closely behind in third with 22 tallies. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. Liberty leads the all-time series, 6-4-3. The two squads met in the 2012 regular season finale, last season, resulting in a 1-0 victory for the Lancers on Liberty's East Campus Fields (Oct. 23, 2012). Four days later, the two teams met in Farmville for the 2012 Big South Championship quarterfinals. The contest ended in a 1-1 tie with the Lancers advancing in penalty kicks. A Look at Liberty The Liberty women's soccer team picked up a key win on Senior Day, defeating Coastal Carolina, 1-0, Saturday afternoon, at Osborne Stadium. With the victory, the Lady Flames clinch a top four seed and home game in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Big South Women's Soccer Championship on Nov. 3. For the second straight contest, Liberty's Rebecca Smith scored the Lady Flames' lone goal off a Brittany Aanderud assist. With both teams scoreless in the 83rd minute, Aanderud fired a shot at the Chanticleers' net, ricocheting it off the far post. Smith cleaned up the loose ball, blasting it into the back of the net from six yards out. The marker was Smith's third of the season, while Aanderud's assist ties her with Julia Delgatti for the team lead with four. Liberty improved to 12-5-1 overall, marking the third time in program history the Lady Flames have recorded at least 12 wins in a single season and the first time since 2005. That year, Liberty captured its third and most recent Big South Championship. The Lady Flames' seven Big South victories marks the program's largest single-season conference win total. In addition, Liberty concludes the regular season with a 7-1 home record and perfect 5-0 mark in conference matches held at Osborne Stadium. Liberty goalkeeper Holly Van Noord added to her single-season program record, earning her conference-leading 11th shutout on the year. Van Noord concluded the afternoon with six saves. Along with her shutout total, the redshirt freshman now leads the Big South with a 0.64 goals-against average. Prior to Saturday's contest, Liberty honored its three seniors – Elmers, Casey Norris and Megan Warner. Norris' appearance marked the 79th contest of her collegiate career, allowing her to surpass Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Nancy Davis for the most games played by a Lady Flame. Aanderud paces the Lady Flames with 14 points on five goals and four assists, while Crystal Elmers closely trails the fellow sophomore with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Alanna Dunkle has four goals in 2013, followed by Warner, Jaime Bouffard and Smith, who each have three markers. Longwood at a Glance The Lancers are coming off a solid road win, Saturday, defeating UNC Asheville, 4-0. Kelsey McDonald, Lilly Payne, Gina D'Orazio and Amanda Spencer each posted goals for Longwood. Spencer, Longwood's leading scorer, is second in the conference with nine goals, while teammate Kelsey Pardue is fifth with seven markers. D'Orazio is tied for first in the league with six assists. Goalkeeper Shelby Hall has appeared in all 18 games for Longwood. The netminder is currently second in the Big South behind Van Noord with seven shutouts and is fourth in goals-against average (1.10). Looking Ahead Liberty returns to Osborne Stadium on Sunday to host a Big South quarterfinals matchup. Game time and opponent are to be determined.
