The Liberty women's soccer team looks to maintain its place in the top half of the Big South standings, playing host to Coastal Carolina, Saturday, at Osborne Stadium. Game time is set for 2 p.m. Liberty leads the all-time series, 9-6-0. With a win over the fifth-place Chanticleers, the Lady Flames can clinch a home game in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Big South Championship, which would be played on Nov. 3.
Prior to the contest, Liberty will honor its three seniors – Dawn Elmers, Casey Norris and Megan Warner. Saturday's game marks a record-setting day for Norris, as she is expected to appear in her 79th contest, surpassing Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Nancy Davis (78, 1998-2001) for the most games played in program history. A Look at Liberty Looking to hold on to third place in the Big South standings, the Liberty women's soccer team squared off with Winthrop at Eagle Field, Wednesday night. Unfortunately for the Lady Flames, Krystyna Freda proved why she is one of the top goal scorers in the country, netting a pair of markers en route to a Winthrop 3-1 victory. With the defeat, Liberty fell to 11-5-1 on the year and 6-2-1 in conference play. Winthrop improved to 11-3-2 overall, moving ahead of the Lady Flames in the Big South standings with a 7-2-0 record. Rebecca Smith posted the lone goal for Liberty, courtesy of an assist from Brittany Aanderud. Aanderud is pacing the Lady Flames with 13 points on five goals and three assists, while Crystal Elmers closely trails the fellow sophomore with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Alanna Dunkle has four goals in 2013, followed by Megan Warner and Jaime Bouffard, who each have three markers. Julia Delgatti leads the team in assists with four. Goalkeeper Holly Van Noord is currently second in the Big South in goals-against average (0.68) and third in saves percentage (.838). The netminder leads the league with 10 shutouts after surpassing Karen Blocker (2012) and Natalie Mayer (2001) for the program's single-season shutout record. Van Noord posted her record-breaking shutout on Oct. 16 in a 2-0 victory over VMI. Junior defender Maddie Boone is coming off a week in which she earned Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors. Boone was instrumental in holding VMI and Gardner-Webb to eight total shots, last week. The honor is Boone's first Big South Defensive Player of the Week nod this season and the second for the Lady Flames in 2013. Van Noord also earned defensive player of the week honors on Sept. 9. Coastal Carolina at a Glance Coastal Carolina enters the weekend is fifth in the conference standings with a 9-7-1 overall record and 6-3 mark in Big South action. The Chanticleers are coming off a huge win on Wednesday, handing Big South leader Radford its first conference defeat of the season with a 1-0 victory. The Coastal Carolina win also snapped the Highlanders' 19-game regular-season unbeaten streak in league play. Sam Patterson posted the game-winning goal at CCU Soccer Field off assists from reigning Big South Attacking Player of the Week Kacey Kelley and Fia Jonsson. Kelley leads the Chanticleers with 17 points on six goals and five assists, followed by Brianna Panico (six goals, three assists) and Jonsson (five goals, three assists). Megan Spencer has spent the most time in goal for the Chanticleers, appearing in all 17 contests. She is currently third in the conference in goals-against average (0.86) and has 59 saves (.808) on the season. Looking Ahead Liberty concludes the 2013 regular season in Farmville, Va., on Tuesday, squaring off with Longwood. The Lancers are currently tied for second place in the conference standings with Winthrop. Liberty leads the all-time series, 6-4-3. Game time for the 14th installment in the series is slated for 7 p.m.
