The N.C. State Wolfpack snapped the Liberty Flames three-game win streak by defeating the Flames, 2-0, Tuesday night at Dail Stadium.
The Wolfpack scored a goal in each half of the non-conference game to halt Liberty's longest win streak of the season.
Liberty drops to 7-6 on the season. N.C. State moves to 5-4-4 on the year.
During the 15th minute, the visiting Flames were able to put pressure on the Wolfpack defense. Off a corner kick, forward Kyle Breitmeyer sent a pass into the center of the 18-yard box. However, no Flame was able to get to the ball to make a shot attempt and N.C. State was able to clear.
The Wolfpack took a 1-0 advantage during the 20th minute. Midfielder Ryan Metts inserted a pass into the box through several defenders for fellow midfielder Nick Surkamp at the near post. One-on-one with Liberty goalkeeper Jeremy Lee, the midfielder scored his fifth goal of the year into the left corner to give host N.C. State an early edge.
During the 36th minute, Liberty midfielder Blessing Tahuona got free on the left side of the box. The sophomore bent a shot wide of the right post wide.
Shots were at a premium during the first half, with the Wolfpack holding a 6-3 advantage. They also held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
Lee made an outstanding save to during the early minutes of the second half. N.C. State midfielder Alex Martinez forced a turnover inside the box and fired a shot from the right side of the six-yard box during the 52nd minute. Lee dove and deflected the shot out of bounds. Liberty cleared the ensuing corner kick.
After the shot, play settle into the midfield, as each team providing solid defensive efforts.
Liberty pressure paid off in a scoring opportunity during the 76th minute. After a thrown in along the right side box, defender Sam Duininck sent a cross to the far post. The ball was cleared. But midfielder Jonatan Torres jumped on the loose ball and pushed the shot high.
The Wolfpack extended its advantage to 2-0 with a goal during the 81st minute. Countering, midfielder Danny DiPrima sent a pass forward for Martinez, who scored his second goal of the year.
Another Liberty scoring opportunity was turned away during the 88th minute. Off a corner kick into the left side of the 18-yard box, N.C. State was able to clear.
N.C. State held a 12-4 shot advantage over Liberty and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Lee recorded four saves on the night. Fabian Otte made one save during the 90 minutes for the Wolfpack.
Liberty will step back into Big South Conference action, Friday. The Flames will travel to Conway, S.C. for a match with the No. 6th ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at CCU Soccer Field.
