Fresh off a strong showing at the UVa Fall Classic, the Liberty men's tennis team returns to the court this weekend with an appearance in the Wake Forest Fall Invite in Winston-Salem, N.C. The tournament gets under way tomorrow morning at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex and will conclude on Sunday.
Liberty is one of 17 schools who will be sending players to the tournament, including contestants from five nationally ranked schools. Also joining the Flames will be Wake Forest, Charlotte, UNCG, Penn State, Davidson, Norfolk State, UNCW, Duke, Furman, Stetson, South Carolina State, Iowa, NC State, East Carolina, Lenoir-Rhyne and Elon.
A quartet of doubles tandems will open play for the Flames at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. In the A Flight, Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero challenge Wake Forest's Anthony Delcore and Pedro Dumont. Thomas and Azuero will be looking for their second doubles flight title in a row, after capturing the Blue bracket championship this past weekend in Charlottesville.
Dillon Segur and Stan Vaughan face Joel Cook and Luke Synn of Furman in the B Bracket, while Egon Samaai and Alejandro Llamas are pitted against Davidson's Ricky Saad and Evan Watkins in the C Flight. In the final doubles draw, Guillem Secanell and Carson Greve challenge Alex Calott and Carl Solik of Charlotte.
Liberty has eight players slated to compete in singles action. Greve is the Flames' earliest participant, squaring off against Watkins at 10 a.m. in the D1 Flight.
Thomas faces Norfolk State's Dimitry Zyhmantovich in the top singles flight, beginning at 11 a.m. After posting a 3-1 record and finishing third in the difficult top draw at the UVa Fall Classic, Thomas has a 6-4 singles mark so far during the fall season.
Secanell follows shortly after Thomas, playing UNCG's Nazhone Wilkins at 11:15 a.m. in the D2 Bracket. An hour later at 12:15 p.m., Segur challenges top-seeded Sam Bloom of Wake Forest in the B1 Flight.
Llamas and Vaughan both will play at 1:30 p.m. in the C1 Bracket. Vaughan, who is tied with Thomas and Azuero for the team lead in singles victories this fall with six, goes up against Furman's Juan Sheppard, while Llamas plays Paul Cisti of Charlotte.
Azuero will look to carry the momentum of his singles title at the UVa Fall Classic into his opening singles match versus Igor Braga of Norfolk State at 12:30 p.m. in the C2 Flight. Also competing in the C2 Bracket at 12:30 p.m. will be Samaai. The sophomore faces Iowa's Andres Estenssoro.
