Liberty lacrosse head coach Kelly Nangle announced the hiring of Meghan Harkey as an assistant coach, rounding out the first-year coach's staff. Harkey, who spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant under former head coach Regan Denham, will now be a full-time member of the Liberty coaching staff.
Last season, Harkey helped guide the Lady Flames to their highest win total (8) in program history. Liberty notched a 4-3 record in conference play, reaching the semifinals of the inaugural Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship. A quartet of players earned postseason conference honors, including Jen Freymond who was tabbed to the first team.
A native of Purcellville, Va., Harkey competed collegiately for four seasons at Christopher Newport while earning her degree in communication studies. She earned a variety of accolades as a CNU Captain, beginning with the honor of USA South Conference Rookie of the Year in 2008. She also garnered USA South first team all-conference and USA South All-Tournament team honors in 2008, and repeated the selections each of the next three seasons.
Harkey added second team all-region honors to her list of awards in 2010 and 2011 and served as team captain in 2011. She left her mark on CNU's record books, ending her career as the program leader in points (343) and assists (149). During her junior campaign, she posted the program record for points in a season with 105 (59 goals, 46 assists).
