Rising senior Emilie Kaufman will compete in two individual events at the 2013 U.S. Open, held in Irvine, Calif., this Tuesday through Saturday.
Liberty will send five of its swimming student-athletes to Irvine, Calif., to compete in the 2013 U.S. Open, held this Tuesday through Saturday at the William Woollet Jr. Aquatics Center. Rising seniors Brye Ravettine and Emilie Kaufman, along with junior Emily Duff and sophomores Laura Day and Jess Reinhardt, have qualified to compete in individual events. Junior Cori Gary will compete in the 400 medley relay. Ravettine, who qualified for the U.S. Open in the 50 free and 100 free, will be unable to participate due to a family situation which arose this week. This marks the third straight summer in which Liberty has had swimmers compete at national meets, which included the 2011 USA Swimming National Championships and the 2012 Olympic Trials. Last year, Ravettine became the first Liberty swimmer to compete at the US Olympic Team Trials, while then incoming freshmen Day (USA) and Reinhardt (Australia) gained Olympic Trials experience in 2012. Kaufman, a Kirkland, Wash., product, begins Liberty's participation on Wednesday, with the 200-meter breaststroke. She will then compete in the 100 breaststroke, Friday. The rising senior earned her spot in 200 breaststroke qualifying at the U.S. Open when she swam a program-best 2:15.00 to win the 2013 CCSA Championship in the 200-yard breaststroke. Duff, hailing from Clayton, N.C., will compete in the 200-meter backstroke on Wednesday morning. She punched her ticket to Irvine by clocking a program-record 1:58.30 during the 200-yard back A final at the conference championships, placing second in the event. A native of Gatton, Queensland, Australia, Reinhardt swims in Thursday's 100-meter fly prelims. Reinhardt, who competed in the 100 fly at the 2013 NCAA Championships, was named the 2013 CCSA Women's Freshman of the Meet after sweeping the 100 and 200 fly. She swam 52.87 in the 100-yard fly at the Ohio State Last Chance Meet. Friday will see Day and Kaufman contest the 100-meter breaststroke. Kaufman set a new CCSA record in the 100-yard breaststroke, 1:01.04, during CCSA prelims, earning her way to the U.S. Open. Day, a native of Peyton, Colo., placed second to Kaufman in the 200 breast at the CCSA Championships, before winning the CCSA title in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.45. She then lowered her U.S. Open qualifying time to 1:01.26 at the Ohio State Last Chance Meet. The Lady Flames' 400-meter medley relay, set to compete in a timed final on Friday evening, holds the 12th-fastest seed time in the field, at 4:15.15. Liberty's qualifying relay consisted of Kaufman, Day, Reinhardt and Gary, in that order. Emily Duff is also a candidate to lead off, while either Kaufman or Day will likely complete the second leg.
