"It has shaped up to be quite a challenging schedule, featuring teams from historically good basketball leagues," Layer stated. "We will see various styles and systems both on the road and at the Vines Center. I think our team is looking forward to the new season." Liberty is coming off a memorable season, making headlines with an incredible four-game run in the 2013 Big South Championship en route to its third conference title and NCAA Tournament bid in program history. The Flames' Cinderella run garnered national media attention, as they became the second 20-loss team in NCAA history to compete in the tournament. The defending Big South Champions open the season inside the Vines Center against fellow Hill City competitor Randolph College on Nov. 8. Liberty then heads to Williamsburg, Va., on Nov. 12 in hopes of avenging last season's home opener loss to William & Mary. During the contest, the Tribe rallied from a 15-point deficit to claim a 71-59 victory. Layer's squad returns home for matchups against Western Carolina (Nov. 16) and UNCW (Nov. 18), before heading to Charlottesville to kick off the Corpus Christi Challenge against the Cavaliers. In their most recent meeting on Nov. 25, 2008, the Flames pulled off the upset against the ACC member, edging Virginia on its home floor, 86-82. Liberty continues play in the invitational at Missouri State on Nov. 26. The tournament concludes at Corpus Christi (Nov. 29-30) with the Flames facing two of the following three teams – Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Hampton and Sam Houston State. The Flames alternate between home and away games through the rest of the non-conference slate. Liberty will host Greensboro College (Dec. 7), Howard (Dec. 17), Southeastern University (Fla.) (Dec. 28) and Princeton (Jan. 4). The team's remaining non-conference road contests include Austin Peay (Dec. 14), Furman (Dec. 20) and Delaware (Jan. 1). Big South action commences in January, with the Flames opening their conference schedule at Radford (Jan. 8). During league play, Liberty will host Campbell (Jan. 14), High Point (Jan. 18), Presbyterian College (Jan. 25), Winthrop (Feb. 4), Gardner-Webb (Feb. 11), VMI (Feb. 15), Longwood (Feb. 25) and Radford (March 1). The 2014 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Men's Basketball Championship takes place March 5-9 inside The HTC Center. The top two seeds in each division receive a bye, giving way to first-round matchups among the remaining seeds on March 5, followed by quarterfinals (March 7), semifinals (March 8) and finals (March 9). The winner earns an automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament, with the opening round beginning March 18. All television assignments and game times will be announced at a later date.
