The Liberty volleyball team has released its 2013 fall schedule.
2013 Liberty Volleyball Schedule Liberty Volleyball Head Coach Shane Pinder and his coaching staff have released the Lady Flames' 2013 fall schedule. The 2013 season will see the Lady Flames compete in four tournaments, as part of a challenging non-conference slate. In total, the Lady Flames will face two teams that finished 2012 inside the AVCA Top 25 (No. 20 Kentucky and No. 22 Ohio State). Also, Liberty will meet three NCAA Tournament qualifiers from a year ago, seven 20-win teams and one conference regular-season champion (Utah State – WAC). Liberty opens the campaign, Aug. 30-31 in DeKalb, Ill., at an invitational hosted by 2012 MAC runner-up Northern Illinois. Competing near senior defensive specialist Becca Haraf's hometown of Arlington Heights, Ill., the Lady Flames will also meet Green Bay and Ohio State of the Big Ten. The Lady Flames will open their eight-match home schedule against Georgetown on Sept. 3. Liberty begins its season with 13 out of its first 14 contests away from the Vines Center. The team then travels to Lexington, Ky., for the Kentucky Tournament, Sept. 6-7, facing three 20-win programs on the weekend. In addition to 2012 NCAA Sweet 16 qualifier Kentucky, Liberty will face Commonwealth foe VCU and defending Atlantic Sun champion East Tennessee State. Liberty travels to Durham, N.C., the following weekend, competing in the Duke Invitational. While there, the Lady Flames meet the host Blue Devils of the ACC, along with the SEC's South Carolina and 2012 WAC regular-season champion Utah State. On Sept. 20, the Lady Flames travel to Morgantown, W.Va., for a tournament at West Virginia. Liberty will compete against the Big 12's Mountaineers, along with UMBC. The Lady Flames open up conference play at Radford on Sept. 27, beginning their Big South schedule against the Highlanders for the third season in a row. The team then steps outside of conference play for an Oct. 1 match at William & Mary. Liberty will host Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville on Oct. 4 and 5, respectively, for its first two home conference matches of the campaign. The following weekend sends the squad to North Carolina to face Campbell (Oct. 11) and High Point (Oct. 12). Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina visit the Vines Center the following weekend. The Lady Flames and Chanticleers meet in a rematch of the 2012 Big South Volleyball Championship final on Oct. 19. Liberty closes out the month of October with a weekend stay in South Carolina, playing at Presbyterian College, Oct. 25 before facing Winthrop the following afternoon. The Lady Flames host Radford on Nov. 1, part of a three-match homestand to finish their 2013 Vines Center schedule. The team faces High Point and Campbell in Lynchburg on Nov. 8 and 9, respectively. Liberty's 2013 regular-season schedule wraps up with contests at UNC Asheville (Nov. 15) and Gardner-Webb (Nov. 16). The 2013 Big South Volleyball Championship will be hosted by Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., Nov. 21-24. The winner of the conference tournament receives the Big South's automatic qualifying bid to the 2013 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. The 2013 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship is scheduled to begin on Dec. 5. Last year, the Lady Flames captured their second Big South conference tournament championship in a row, and fourth in the past six seasons. Liberty downed Coastal Carolina, 3-1, in the Big South Volleyball Championship final. The team went 25-8, including 12-2 in Big South matches, good for its sixth straight conference regular-season title. The 2012 squad recorded its sixth consecutive 20-win season, and qualified for the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, meeting No. 8 Minnesota in the first round.
