The sixth-seeded Liberty Lady Flames will begin the 2013 Big South Softball Championship on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., facing No. 3 seed Longwood in the first round.
Big South Softball Championship Tournament Central Liberty will serve as the No. 6 seed in the 2013 Big South Softball Championship, to be held Thursday through Sunday in Rock Hill, S.C. The Lady Flames (19-35, 8-16 Big South) will open the double-elimination conference tournament against No. 3 seed Longwood (36-17, 16-8) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Winthrop's Terry Field. Conference newcomer Longwood will be Liberty's first opponent in the conference tournament. Although these two teams have not met before in the postseason, they have a long history against each other. Longwood holds a 25-13 lead over the Lady Flames since 1994, Liberty's first season as an NCAA Division I softball program. Liberty went 1-2 during the regular season against Longwood this year, with the visiting team winning all three meetings. The Lady Flames held off a furious Longwood rally, winning 8-7 on April 8 at Lancer Field. The Lancers then swept Liberty, 14-6 and 9-2, on April 15 at Liberty Softball Field. The winner of Thursday's game between the Lady Flames and Lancers will face the winner of No. 2 Campbell and No. 7 Gardner-Webb, Friday at 4:30 p.m. The losers of the Liberty vs. Longwood and Campbell vs. Gardner-Webb games will meet in an elimination game on Friday at 11:30 a.m. Defending Big South Tournament champion Coastal Carolina went 19-5 in conference play this season to capture the regular-season league title for the first time since 2006. Campbell earned the second seed after posting an 18-6 league mark, while Longwood's 16-8 conference record was good for third place. Radford (13-11) swept Winthrop (12-12) this weekend, moving the Highlanders into fourth position while giving the Eagles the fifth seed. Liberty finished in a tie for sixth place with Gardner-Webb, at 8-16. The Lady Flames gained the tiebreaker by winning their season series against the Runnin' Bulldogs, 2-1. Eighth-seeded Presbyterian College (7-16) and ninth-seeded Charleston Southern (6-17) will open the tournament with an elimination game on Thursday at 9 a.m. The 2013 Big South Softball Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting begins on Thursday, with five games scheduled, and concludes with the championship contest on Sunday, at noon, live on ESPNU. The Big South's tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division I Softball Championship. All games for the conference tournament will be video streamed live on the Big South Network presented by State Farm.
