After playing a key role in Liberty's two conference wins last week, Lady Flames' goalkeeper Kristen Masullo was named the Big South Conference Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, as announced this morning by the conference office. Masullo's award covers games played April 8-14.
Masullo's plaudit is the third defensive player of the week honor for Liberty this season, joining Jen Moyer and Jen Freymond who earned the awards on Feb. 11 and March 12, respectively.
On Friday in the Lady Flames' win at Coastal Carolina, Masullo tallied four saves, while surrendering just six goals. The junior also scooped up a ground ball in the victory. Against Winthrop on Sunday, Masullo registered 11 saves overall, including six crucial second-half stops, three of which came with less than five minutes to play in regulation. The 12-11 double-overtime win against the Eagles clinched a top-four seed and a spot in the Big South Conference Lacrosse Championship for Liberty. The Berkeley Heights, N.J. native posted a 7.99 goals-against average and .469 save percentage for the week.
Masullo leads the Big South in save percentage (.485) and ranks second in GAA (9.82) and saves per game (8.31). Among national leaders, Masullo ranks fifth in saves (133), seventh in save percentage (.485) and 17th in saves per game (8.31).
Masullo and the rest of the Lady Flames will play their final regular-season contest on Saturday against Big South foe Longwood. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
