Sophomore Chandler Ball pitched a complete-game four-hitter in Liberty's 10-1 win over Hampton, Wednesday.
A pair of four-run innings and a four-hitter by Chandler Ball keyed Liberty's 10-1, five-inning victory over Hampton in game two of a twin bill, Wednesday at the Liberty Softball Field. The Lady Flames (4-7) earned a split in the doubleheader, after Hampton (5-10) had downed the Lady Flames in extra innings during game one. Liberty scored its most runs since plating 14 runs in its regular-season finale last year against Longwood. Liberty exploded for four runs in both the first and second innings, as the hosts registered three doubles and one home run. Four different Lady Flames – Katie Zavodny, Sammi Shivock, Kelby Allen and Grace Nordan – scored two runs apiece. Shivock and Allen both went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, with Shivock doubling and Allen hitting a homer. Zavodny stole two bases for the second game in a row, giving her 10 steals on the season. Ball (2-2) picked up a complete-game four-hitter, allowing one unearned run on the afternoon. Kerissa Burruel batted 2-for-2, as the only Lady Pirate with multiple hits in the game. Bobbi Langlois (1-6) took the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on five hits, walking four in two innings pitched. Jecholia Pratt pitched the final two innings for Hampton, yielding one earned run on three hits. Liberty jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on the corners, Shivock plated Zavodny with a squeeze bunt. Blair Lawrence then scored on a passed ball. Following a walk to Nordan, Allen sent a two-run blast over the wall in right center, making it 4-0, Liberty. The Lady Flames doubled their lead with another four-run frame in the second. Shivock plated both Zavodny and Jill Stephens when she singled with two outs. Nordan followed up by hitting an RBI double. A fielding error on an Allen fly ball scored Nordan, increasing Liberty's edge to 8-0. Hampton got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. With runners on second and third with one out, Langlois scored on an error by Nordan, making it 8-1. Ball got out of the inning when she got Bianca Vallejo to pop out. Liberty added two runs in the top of the fourth, as Shivock doubled and then scored on an Allen single. Nichols sent a towering fly to center which was dropped by Hampton's Adrianna Scott, pushing across Allen with Liberty's 10th run. The Lady Pirates went in order during the top of the fifth, and Liberty sealed the 10-1, run-rule victory. Liberty will travel to Johnson City, Tenn., to face East Tennessee State, next Tuesday. The first game of Tuesday's twin bill is set to begin at 2 p.m.
