Max McKay carded a four-under par 67 to lead the Flames during the opening round of the Arizona Intercollegiate.
The 15-team field at the Arizona Intercollegiate nearly completed 36 holes of action before play was suspended due to darkness late Monday evening.
Each team has three to five holes remaining to complete their second round in the 54-hole event, which is being contested at The Golf Club at Vistoso, a par-71, 6,932-yard course.
Following the opening 18 holes of play, No. 18/24 Liberty shared third place with host Arizona, with both programs opening their spring seasons with a two-under par 282.
TCU finished its opening round of golf strong to overtake No. 1/1 ranked California late in the first round. TCU wrapped up play during the morning flight with a four-under par 280, with California trailing by one stroke following a three-under par 281.
No. 4/5 New Mexico rounded out the top five teams in the 15-team field with a one-over par 285. Ten golfers found red figures during the first round of the Arizona Intercollegiate, paced by California's Joel Statler, who carded a six-under par 65.
Liberty's Max McKay was one of three golfers to post a four-under par 67 to share second place. The Flames' senior golfer overcame an early double bogey with seven birdies and a bogey to post his low 18-hole total of the 2012-13 season.
Chase Marinell and Mathieu Fenasse were two of eight golfers to card level par rounds of 71 on Monday to share 11th place.
Marinell offset three bogeys with three birdies during his 18 holes of play, while Fenasse's even par round was spotlighted by an eagle on the par-5 No. 2 hole.
Niklas Lindstrom and Ian McConnell round out Liberty's golfers in the 92-man field with both golfers posting a two-over par 73.
Lindstrom was able to overcome a stretch where he bogeyed three out of four holes early in his round thanks to three birdies and Liberty's second eagle at No. 2.
McConnell found himself three over after three holes of play, but was able to make some adjustments to find three birdies and only two additional bogeys during his closing 15 holes.
All 15 teams will return to The Golf Club at Vistoso on Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. (MST) to wrap up their second round of play before immediately starting the final round of the Arizona Intercollegiate.
