JDL Fast Track Information

This weekend, the Liberty men's and women's indoor track & field teams will get their first look at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C., the facility which will play host to the 2013 Big South Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships next month. Most of the Flames and Lady Flames will compete at Saturday's Wake Forest Invitational, while nine mid-distance and distance runners are entered in the Virginia Tech Invitational, set for Friday and Saturday in Blacksburg, Va.

This will mark Liberty's second weekend of competition during the 2012-13 indoor campaign. The Flames and Lady Flames opened the season at the Liberty Kickoff, way back on Nov. 30-Dec. 1.

Facts about the Facilities
The JDL Fast Track has been open for a year, after hosting its first meet on Jan. 27-28, 2012. The 200-meter flat track will host the 2013 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 21-22, before hosting the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 23-24. It was also announced that the JDL Fast Track will be the venue for the 2014 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Virginia Tech's Rector Field House was the site of the 2012 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships, where Liberty swept the men's and women's conference titles. The facility features a 200-meter banked track and will host this year's ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Championship Feel
Four Liberty athletes who captured Big South indoor event titles in 2012 will compete at the Wake Forest Invitational this weekend, previewing the venue where they will attempt to defend their championships. The list includes Mychelle Cumings (women's shot put), Leonard Robbins (men's 400), Ryan Smith (men's shot put and weight throw) and Kyle Wheeler (men's high jump).

New Faces
The Liberty women's track & field team features a lot of new faces this season, with 23 freshmen on the roster. A dozen of them are expected to compete at the Wake Forest Invitational on Saturday.

Corinn Bedell and Janae Jones were two Lady Flames freshmen who opened their collegiate careers in impressive fashion at the Liberty Kickoff. Bedell finished fourth in the 400-meter dash and anchored Liberty's 4 x 400 relay quartet to a come-from-behind victory. Meanwhile, Jones won the Liberty Kickoff triple jump title, with a distance (38-10.25) that fell just 2.25 inches shy of the ECAC qualification standard.

Positive Memories
After a successful cross country season, senior team captain Khristina Kanagy will make her track & field season debut on Saturday, running the 3K at the Virginia Tech Invitational alongside teammates Meredith Mistretta and Betel Yosef.

Kanagy's most recent race at the Rector Field House was a memorable one, as she won the women's 5K title at the 2012 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships, helping the Lady Flames wrap up the team crown.

A Good Quantity of Qualifiers
Eleven Liberty athletes qualified for the IC4A and ECAC meets at the season-opening Liberty Kickoff. The list of IC4A qualifiers includes Paul Arslain (500, 4 x 400), Caleb Edmonds (5K), Kevin Reddington (Long Jump), Leonard Robbins (4 x 400), ConRoy Smith (200, 4 x 400), Ryan Smith (Shot Put, Weight Throw), Roderick Spruel (60) and Andre Washington (60, 400, 4 x 400).

Meanwhile, the women's trio of Mychelle Cumings (Shot Put), Abigail Flower (60, 200) and Christina Mitchell (Pentathlon) posted ECAC-qualifying marks right off the bat.
