Junior Bethany Wakeley is one of nine CCSA individual event champions set to compete at the Florida Gulf Coast Quad Meet on Saturday.
The Liberty swimming team begins the 2013 portion of its season on Saturday, competing in a quad meet hosted by Florida Gulf Coast. The meet, which begins at 11 a.m., consists of Liberty, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia Southern and North Dakota. The Lady Flames will cap off a week-long training trip on Saturday with a meet that features the teams that placed first (FGCU), second (Liberty) and third (Georgia Southern) at the 2012 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships. Also, nine CCSA individual champions will be competing at FGCU Aquatics Center on Saturday. The event will be scored in dual-meet fashion. The program includes 12 individual swimming events, two relays and a pair of diving competitions. This will be the third season in a row in which Liberty has opened the New Year by training in Fort Myers, Fla. North Dakota was also one of the teams at the 2012 Florida Gulf Coast Quad Meet. The Lady Flames have posted a 5-1 dual-meet record so far this season, including conference victories over Campbell, Gardner-Webb and VMI. Liberty also defeated Boston College of the ACC and Maine in non-conference action. Most recently, the Lady Flames placed fifth at the Hokie Fall Invitational, hosted by Virginia Tech in late November. Liberty lowered five program records during the course of the meet, including three by Emilie Kaufman. Kaufman, a junior, broke program records in the 100 (1:01.85) and 200 (2:19.12) breaststroke, along with the 200 individual medley (2:04.35) at Virginia Tech. Her 100 breaststroke time also set a conference record and met the NCAA Division I B standard. Freshman Hannah Wakeley broke the program record in the 1,650 free at the Hokie Fall Invitational, swimming 17:40.40. The Lady Flames also clocked a school-record 1:43.68 in the 200 medley relay at the meet, with Emily Duff, Kaufman, Jess Reinhardt and Brye Ravettine contributing to the record relay. Kaufman has been named CCSA Women's Swimmer of the Week twice this season (Oct. 17 and Nov. 21). She is ranked second in the conference in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM so far this season. Freshman Jess Reinhardt's 100 fly time of 55.33 has her rated second in the CCSA at present. Ravettine, a 2012 All-American and CCSA Swimmer of the Year, has clocked 23.29 in the 50 free and 51.90 in the 100 free so far this season. She has four individual event victories this year and has been a key contributor to the team's sprint relays. Hannah Wakeley broke Liberty's record in the 1000 free during her first collegiate meet, swimming 10:34.02 on Oct. 12 at Campbell. Fellow freshman Laura Day set a school record in the 200 breaststroke at 2:24.12 on Oct. 20, which has since been broken by Kaufman. A total of nine Liberty swimmers have claimed at least one individual event victory this season, with four freshmen posting event wins. At present, all of Liberty's swimming records are held by current Lady Flames swimmers. Seven different Lady Flames currently hold at least one individual program record. Relays have been a source of strength for the Lady Flames, as Liberty's 200 free relay and 200 and 400 medley relays are all rated second in the latest CCSA top times list.
Florida Gulf Coast (2-2) Four-time defending CCSA champion Florida Gulf Coast is off to a 2-2 dual-meet start this season, with wins over ACC opponents Miami (Fla.) and Georgia Tech. The Eagles placed second at the Georgia Tech Invitational and finished third at the All-Florida Invitational. Four Eagles have posted NCAA Division I B-cut swims so far this season. Freshman Julie Leth-Espensen holds B cuts in the 200 breaststroke along with 200 and 400 IM. Sophomore Emma Svensson has two B cuts, in the 50 free and 100 back. Freshman Jennifer Morgan (200 back) and senior Danielle Beaubrun (100 breast) have each met one B standard. Liberty is 0-2 all-time in head-to-head dual meets against Florida Gulf Coast.
Georgia Southern (3-0) Georgia Southern is 3-0 so far this season, opening the campaign with a win over CCSA foe College of Charleston. The Eagles have also defeated Savannah College of Art and Design and Davis & Elkins. GSU finished second out of nine teams at the Wingate Fall Frenzy on Nov. 18, falling to Gardner-Webb by 19 points. Sophomore Elaina Lanson ranks fourth in the conference in the 50 free and fifth for the 100 free. Junior Kristen Bates, who posted a 100 breaststroke victory at the 2012 CCSA Championships, ranks third in the CCSA at the event this season. 2012 CCSA 200 breaststroke champion Courtney Harrison is sixth at that distance this year. The Lady Flames are 1-2 all-time against Georgia Southern, and used a 1-2 finish in the meet-ending 400 free relay to defeat the Eagles, 148-146, at the Davidson Duals on Jan. 28, 2012.
North Dakota (4-4) North Dakota is 4-4, with two wins over St. Cloud State and victories against South Dakota and Northern Iowa. The team finished fourth out of six teams at the TYR Invitational, hosted by Northwestern. Senior Veronica Medon has clocked the second-fastest 100 backstroke time in the WAC, at 55.63. Her times in the 200 back and 200 IM rank her fifth in the conference. Freshman Caitlin Quon has conference top-8 times in the 500 and 1000 free, while freshman Ali Church is sixth in the 1,650 free. Liberty posted a 121-115 victory over North Dakota at last year's Florida Gulf Coast Quad Meet in the teams' only previous meeting. The Lady Flames claimed the win by tying for second in the 200 free relay. Following the Florida Gulf Coast Quad Meet, the Lady Flames will return home for their next two meets. Liberty hosts Duquesne at the LaHaye Aquatic Center next Friday, Jan. 11, at 3 p.m., and will close out the home schedule on Jan. 26 against Marshall.
