#5 Seed Flames Fall to #6 Seed Bulldogs in Big South Title Game; Just Breaks LU Season Hit Mark

The #6 seed UNC Asheville Bulldogs erased a 10-run deficit to defeat the #5 Liberty Flames, 16-11, in Game 11 of the 2006 Bojangles Big South Baseball Championship, Saturday night, at Watson Stadium, to claim its first-ever Big South Baseball Championship. Flames second baseman Michael Just finished his career with four hits to break the Liberty single season hit record in the contest.

Boosted by a three-run first and a four-run second, the #5 seed Liberty Flames jumped out a 7-1 lead which they never relinquished in eliminating the #2 seed Winthrop Eagles, 11-7, in Game 10 of the 2006 Bojangles Big South Baseball Championship at Watson Stadium. The win secures a place for Liberty in the Big South Championship title contest this evening.

#6 seed UNC Asheville Hands #5 seed Liberty First Setback in Game 9 of the Big South Baseball Championship

The #6 seed UNC Asheville staved off elimination by handing the #5 seed Liberty Flames its first defeat of the tournament in Game 9 of the 2006 Big South Baseball Championship, Saturday afternoon. The contest had been halted due to thunderstorms with high winds and heavy rains, Friday night with the Bulldogs leading 3-1 in the top of the eighth inning.

Outfielder Philip Laurent, second baseman Michael Just and third baseman Chad Miller were all named to the Big South all-conference second team, while pitcher Phillip Thompson was selected to the conference's all-academic team, the league announced last evening before Game 3 of the 2006 Bojangles Big South Championship.

For the second-straight game, the lower-seeded team proved victorious as fifth-seeded Liberty used a seven-run sixth inning to pick up a 9-6 win over second-seeded Winthrop in Game 2 of the 2006 Big South Baseball Championship, Wednesday afternoon, at Watson Stadium.

The fifth-seeded Liberty University Flames (35-19, 13-11 Big South) will square off against the second-seeded Winthrop University Eagles (42-14, 17-7 Big South) in Game 2 of the 2006 Big South Baseball Championship at Charles Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C., on May 24, 2006, at 3 p.m. The winner will face the winner of Game 3 between third-seeded Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers and fourth-seeded High Point Panthers on Thursday, May 25.

Flames the Fifth Seed as Seedings for 2006 Bojangles' Big South Baseball Championship Announced

The Liberty Flames have garnered the fifth seed for this week's Bojangles' Big South Baseball Championship presented by PUPS/PDPS at Charles Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field on the campus of Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. It is the first time the Flames have ever been seeded fifth at the Big South Championship.
