Director of Athletics
B.S., East Carolina ('81)
Jeff Barber was named the Director of Athletics at Liberty University on Jan. 23, 2006, becoming the 10th Director of Athletics in the history of the University.
The University has charged Barber with the leadership of the athletics department and the building of a strong athletic program which will guide Liberty into the ranks of the elite NCAA Division I programs in the nation at the FBS level.
Barber wasted little time making an impact at Liberty, as in seven years he has been instrumental in guiding Liberty on a path to the next level of collegiate athletics. His efforts were recognized in June 2012, when he was named the FCS Under Armour AD of the Year for the Southeast Region.
Barber has spearheaded facility improvement projects in every athletics venue, highlighted most recently by the new, 2,500-seat Liberty Baseball Stadium, which opened in February 2013. Additionally, a new basketball practice facility was constructed behind the Vines Center and the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex was completely rebuilt.
In addition to Barber’s athletics facility achievements, the Director of Athletics has spurred a dramatic record-setting increase in Flames Club memberships, giving, and season ticket sales for football and basketball. Also under Barber, marketing/sponsorship revenue has increased at 120 percent each of the past six years.
Barber has overseen a significant expansion of the Liberty Academic Affairs for Athletics office, which was granted national academic certification by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A).
Barber has also guided the Flames to success on the athletics field of competition, highlighted by an unprecedented six consecutive Big South Sasser Cup championships.
The Flames’ success has garnered national attention on several levels, earning Barber a four-year appointment to the NCAA’s Leadership Council, beginning with the 2012-13 academic year.
Barber came to Liberty after spending 10 years at South Carolina, including his last three years as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development/Gamecock Club Executive Director. He also worked for four years apiece in both the Furman and East Carolina athletic departments.
Barber graduated cum laude at East Carolina in 1981 with a bachelor of science degree in health, physical education and recreation. In 1997, he continued his education with a degree from the Sports Management Institute, graduating as class spokesman.
Barber, a native of Greenville, N.C., is married to the former Donna Dacus and the couple has three children – Katie (18), Lindsay (16) and Jay (15).
