Stell and Blocker Earn All-State Honors
Liberty women's soccer defender Lauren Stell and goalkeeper Karen Blocker have been voted second team all-state by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), as announced by the organization.
Stell and Blocker give the Lady Flames' program 17 total all-state selections and nine second team members all-time.
Despite spending the majority of her time on defense in 2010, Stell concluded the season third on the team with nine points on four goals and one assist, earning Big South All-Conference first team honors. On Sept. 4, she was named Big South Attacking Player of the Week for scoring back-to-back game-winning goals against American and Old Dominion. Stell's pair of performances helped the Lady Flames achieve their best start to a season in program history.
Later in the month, on Sept. 22, she posted another game-winning goal in Liberty's 2-0 win over UNC Asheville. In addition to her quartet of tallies, Stell was instrumental as a defender, helping Liberty finish second in the conference in fewest goals allowed (16), goals-against average (0.74) and third in shutouts (9).
Blocker closed her career as Liberty's all-time shutout leader with 20, and posted a program-best goals-against average of 1.33. She concluded her tenure No. 2 on the school's career saves list with 339.
Blocker was voted to the Big South All-Conference second team, finishing second in the conference behind Radford's Che' Brown in goals-against average (0.74), save percentage (.843) and shutouts (9). On Sept. 25, the Bowie, Md., native was named Big South Defensive Player of the Week for her performance in wins over Presbyterian College and UNC Asheville.
