The Flames Sports Network continues its postseason coverage of the 2012 football season as FSN reporter Nick Pierce recaps Liberty's defense with defensive coordinator Robert Wimberly.

Wimberly first came to Liberty in 2004 and left the Flames after the 2008 to join head coach Turner Gill at Buffalo. Wimberly followed Gill to Kansas and returned to Liberty Mountain last January when Gill named him the Flames' new defensive coordinator.

In his first season at the helm of Liberty's defensive efforts, Wimberly's defense was second among Big South programs and ranked No. 16 in the country in total defense (314.74 yards allowed per game) and No. 38 in scoring defense (22.18 points per game allowed).

Six of Wimberly's defenders earned All-Big South accolades (first team: Nick Sigmon, LB; Brent Vinson, DB; second team: Bryant Lewellyn, DL; Cory Freeman, DL; Scott Hyland, LB; Walt Aikens, DB).

The Flames also ranked No. 3 in the country in first down defense (14.00 first downs allowed per game) and No. 12 in third-down conversion efficiency (30.92 percent/47-of-152).

Wimberly's defense helped the Flames win six out of their last seven games and claim the program's fifth Big South title in the last six seasons.

The Flames Sports Network will continue its coverage of the 2012 season next week when FSN starts to countdown the Top 10 moments of the year. Moment No. 10 will run on LibertyFlames.com on Monday and the remaining top nine plays will be revealed each weekday until the No. 1 moment is unveiled on Dec. 28.
