Conference-Record Swim Highlights Day Two of VT Invite for Liberty
The Liberty swimming team completed day two of the Hokie Invitational on Friday, one highlighted by a CCSA conference-record and NCAA B cut time from Emilie Kaufman.
Following two days at the three-day event, Liberty remains in fifth place with 264 points. The host Virginia Tech Hokies lead with 1,016.5 points, followed by South Carolina with 569.5 points. UConn holds a slight edge over William & Mary for third place, 359.5-355.5.
This week's event follows the same event format as the 2013 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships. However, the Hokie Fall Invitational allows for unlimited entries for each team.
Kaufman swam 1:01.85 to take third place in the 100 breaststroke, breaking a CCSA conference record while also meeting the NCAA Division I B standard and US Open cut. She had previously clocked 1:02.27 in morning prelims. Laura Day placed sixth overall in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:04.75.
The Lady Flames' 200 medley relay finished in fourth place, as the quartet of Emily Duff, Kaufman, Jess Reinhardt and Brye Ravettine swam a program-record 1:43.68. Liberty's B relay swam 1:45.56 for eighth place.
Reinhardt placed second in the 100 fly, touching the wall in a season-best 55.33. Bethany Wakeley claimed 13th place in 57.57, a season best. Ranndi Grubbs (59.30) and Marley Cripe (59.34) placed 20th and 21st, respectively.
Erin Curry swam 4:40.34 in the B final of the 400 individual medley, while Hannah Wakeley won the C final in 4:39.51.
Emily Duff finished second in the 100 backstroke C final, taking 18th place overall with a time of 57.69.
Liberty clocked 7:46.95 in the 800 free relay to close out the evening, with Bethany Wakeley, Kaufman, Kendall Hough and Duff placing 11th.
Liberty concludes its participation in the Hokie Fall Invitational tomorrow, beginning at 10 a.m. with preliminary rounds of the 200 yard backstroke. The 400 yard freestyle relay will serve as the final event of the meet, closing out the evening session.
