Kelly and Hyland Named to Capital One Academic All-District Team
Senior Pat Kelly and junior Scott Hyland were recently named to the 2012 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District III first team, honoring the efforts of the pair of football players in the classroom.
Kelly was one of two wide receivers selected to the all-district team with his 4.00 GPA in exercise science. Hyland was among the trio of linebackers selected with his 3.93 GPA in biology.
This is the second all-district honor for Kelly, who was named to the same team in 2011 before he was selected to the 2011 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America first team, last December.
Kelly was the 18th student-athlete in Liberty's Division I history to earn Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America status and the fourth player in football program history.
Kelly leads the Flames and ranks No. 11 in the country in receptions per game (7.40), to go along with 813 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The senior posted his third 100-yard game of the year against Stony Brook last weekend, helping him become the fifth player in program history with over 2,000 career receiving yards (2,063).
Hyland ranks second on the team with 50 tackles (16 solo, 34 assisted) and is one of five active players on Liberty's roster with 100 or more career tackles (113 stops). Last weekend, Hyland helped the Flames intercept four passes, recording his second career interception.
Kelly, Hyland and the rest of the Flames will travel to Lexington, Va., this weekend to face in-state foe VMI in their regular season finale. The game at Foster Stadium is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN3.
