Liberty to Face No. 8 Seed CSU in Big South Quarterfinal
Defending Big South champion Liberty will serve as the No. 1 seed for the 2012 Big South Volleyball Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting, to be held next Thursday through Sunday in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The tournament will begin on Thursday at Paul Porter Arena on the campus of Gardner-Webb at noon with match one, featuring the top-seeded Lady Flames (22-7, 12-2 Big South) and the eighth-seeded Charleston Southern Buccaneers (13-20, 5-9). Liberty downed Charleston Southern, 3-2, on Oct. 12 in Charleston during the teams' only meeting this season.
Liberty will face Charleston Southern for the third time in conference postseason play. The Lady Flames are 2-0 in Big South tournament matches against the Buccaneers. In the teams' most recent tournament meeting, Liberty claimed a 3-2 victory in the 2009 conference semifinal match.
Coastal Carolina earned the second seed, thanks to a 10-4 conference record. The Chanticleers edged High Point and Presbyterian College, who finished in a third-place tie with 9-5 Big South marks. High Point won the head-to-head matchup against the Blue Hose, giving High Point the third seed and Presbyterian College the fourth spot.
Winthrop, last year's conference co-regular season champion with Liberty, finished in fifth, at 8-6. UNC Asheville, at 7-7, gained the sixth seed, followed by Radford (6-8) and Charleston Southern (5-9) in seventh and eighth, respectively.
The 2012 Big South Volleyball Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting opens Thursday with four quarterfinal matches, and ends with the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 20. The Big South tournament champion earns an automatic qualification into the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship. Sunday's championship match will be aired live on ESPN3.com
