Three days before its season-opening Preseason WNIT game at Duquesne, the Liberty women's basketball team has been ranked No. 20 in the CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25.
The Lady Flames, who also finished the 2011-12 season at No. 20 in the poll, share the spot with Creighton of the Missouri Valley Conference. Liberty is the only Big South squad to appear in the preseason Mid-Major Top 25.
Delaware is a nearly-unanimous choice as the preseason No. 1, followed by Green Bay and Gonzaga. Delaware is one of four Mid-Major Top 25 teams who are slated to play in the Preseason WNIT, along with Liberty, No. 8 Middle Tennessee and No. 19 Sacred Heart. The Lady Flames are also scheduled to play at No. 6 James Madison on Dec. 4.
The women's Mid-Major Top 25, now in its second year of existence, is comprised of teams from the America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt and West Coast Conferences.
Liberty, which has won 14 Big South Conference titles in the last 16 seasons, is the preseason Big South favorite once again. Head coach Carey Green's Lady Flames return three starters from last year's 24-9 squad, headlined by preseason All-Big South honoree Devon Brown, a redshirt senior guard/forward.
The Lady Flames will play in the Preseason WNIT for the fourth time in program history, beginning with Friday's game at Duquesne. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at the A.J. Palumbo Center. The Liberty-Duquesne victor will advance to play the Davidson-North Carolina victor on Sunday.
