Defending Champion Liberty Draws Third Seed for BSC Championship
The defending Big South champion Liberty Flames men's soccer team will open defense of its title as the No. 3 seed, facing No. 6 seed Winthrop in the quarterfinals, Tuesday night at Osborne Stadium. The conference announced the seedings and pairings for the 2012 Big South Men's Soccer Championship, after the close of the regular season earlier this evening.
Closing out its 2012 regular season on a nine-game unbeaten streak (6-0-3), Liberty finished in a third-place tie in the conference standings with the Campbell Fighting Camels with 21 points. By virtue of their 1-0 victory on Oct. 5 over Campbell, the Flames claim the No. 3 seed for the tournament, while the Camels receive the No. 4 seed. As one of the top four finishers in the conference standings, both teams will host Big South quarterfinal contests on Tuesday.
Liberty finished the 2012 regular season with an 8-6-3 overall record and a 6-1-3 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, Winthrop posted a 5-4-1 Big South record and will enter Tuesday evening's match with a 9-7-1 overall mark. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie on Oct. 20 at Eagle Stadium in Rock Hill, S.C.
Liberty and Winthrop did not meet during the Flames' run to the 2011 Big South Championship title. The 2009 Big South Championship title game was the last time the two teams have squared off during tournament play, with the Eagles taking the contest, 2-1, on Nov. 15 in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The winner of Liberty-Winthrop will advance to Friday's second semifinal game at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C., the host site for this year's tournament, against the winner of No. 2 seed Radford and No. 7 seed Gardner-Webb. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Coastal Carolina, ranked No. 9 nationally, claimed the top seed for the Big South Men's Soccer Championship with a 10-0 Big South mark and 30 points. Radford garnered the second seed with a 7-2-1 record and 22 points.
After Liberty and Campbell, High Point posted a 5-3-2 league record to finish with 17 points to collect the No. 5 seed, followed by Winthrop. Gardner-Webb claimed the No. 7 seed with a 3-5-2 conference record and 11 points, while Presbyterian College rounds out the field with a 3-7 league record and nine points.
The 2012 Big South Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinals will be played at campus sites on Tuesday, before moving to Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. for the semifinals and finals on Nov. 9 and 11. The quarterfinals and semifinals will air on the Big South Network, with the finals airing on ESPN3. The Big South's Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament.
