The Liberty softball team recorded the 20th best GPA among NCAA Division I softball programs during the 2011-12 academic year.
The Liberty softball team earned the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Academic Team award, released on Tuesday by NFCA officials.
The Lady Flames registered a 3.43 team GPA during the 2011-12 academic year, placing them 20th among NCAA Division I softball programs in cumulative GPA. Robert Morris posted the nation's top grade-point average, at 3.6097.
The NFCA All-Academic Team award is given to each member institution that recorded a 3.0 or higher GPA as a team during the 2011-12 academic year. A total of 89 Division I programs met that standard.
Liberty posted the top GPA among Big South schools, as Winthrop (3.362) placed 30th, with Coastal Carolina (3.108) in 75th and Gardner-Webb (3.071) in 81st place.
Later this fall, the NFCA will release its list of All-America Scholar-Athletes. The award is given to any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade-point average or higher during the 2011-12 academic year.
