Lady Flames Conclude Play at ITA Atlantic Regional
The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team competed at the ITA Atlantic Regional this past weekend in Blacksburg, Va.
The Lady Flames had a total of 11 entries in the tournament, including four pairs in the main doubles draw, two entries in the main singles draw and five participants in the singles qualifying draw. The 11 entries were the most ever for a Liberty women's tennis team at the Atlantic Regional tournament.
Nicola Wellman posted the lone win for the Lady Flames over the weekend. The sophomore downed Temple's Maame Ama Osei in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Wellman dropped her next match to Shannon Cleary of UMBC, 6-0, 6-2.
Competing in the main draw, Alexandra Sheeran battled the No. 6 seed, Maria Fucillo of Virginia, but fell 7-6 (3), 6-2. Brittany Yang also earned a spot directly into the main draw, but she too dropped her opening round match against Temple's Jordan Batey, 6-2, 6-1.
"This wasn't our best weekend of tennis, but we had some bright moments," commented Liberty Head Coach Jeff Maren. "Nicola played well, winning her first match against Temple and Aly (Sheeran) went toe to toe against one of the top seeds from Virginia. We have some work to do, but I believe that we can use this experience as motivation to prepare for our next event in Houston."
The Lady Flames will conclude their fall schedule at the Houston Invite in Houston, Texas. The tournament will be played Nov. 2 – Nov. 4.
