Liberty Posts 5 Event Victories at VT Sprint Classic

Brye Ravettine won the 50 free and swam the leadoff leg during Liberty's winning 200 free relay at the Virginia Tech Sprint Classic on Saturday.

On the strength of five event victories and several additional strong performances, Liberty went 2-1 at the Virginia Tech Sprint Classic, Saturday at Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Liberty posted convincing victories over CCSA opponents Gardner-Webb (228-84) and VMI (280-20), while falling to host Virginia Tech of the ACC, 207-107. The Lady Flames are now 3-1 in dual-meet competition this season.

In a meet that featured a 17-event program on the women's side, Virginia Tech won 12 events, while Liberty was victorious in the remaining five races. Liberty finished either first or second in each of four relays, including a win in the 200 free relay.

One Liberty program record was lowered on Saturday, as Laura Day swam 2:24.12 in placing second in the 200 breaststroke. Her time broke the school record of 2:24.24, set by Amber Kerico at the 2011 CCSA Championships.

Brye Ravettine gave Liberty its first win of the day, swimming 23.58 in the 50 free. She was followed in third through fifth places by teammates Marley Cripe (24.15), Meghan Babcock (24.17) and Cori Gary (24.19).

Emilie Kaufman won two individual events, placing first in the 50 breaststroke in 29.02 and following with a 100 IM win during which her time of 57.48 won by over two seconds.

Jess Reinhardt claimed a 50 fly victory in 25.72, and Kaufman placed second (25.88).

Liberty's 200 free relay edged Virginia Tech by .08 of a second (1:35.37 to 1:35.45), with Ravettine, Gary, Chloe Thomas and Cripe competing on the Lady Flames' victorious relay.

Virginia Tech won the 200 medley relay in 1:44.93, with Liberty following in 1:45.50. The Lady Flames also placed second during the 400 medley relay (3:50.74) and 400 free relay (3:33.11).

Emily Duff took second place in the 200 back, swimming 2:04.76 while Holly Harper of Virginia Tech won in 2:04.58.

During the first individual event of the day, Hannah Wakeley placed third in 10:43.84. Bethany Wakeley came in third during the 200 fly, registering a 2:10.92. Day added a third-place finish with a 50 breaststroke swim of 30.09.

Liberty will next travel to Boston for a tri-meet with Boston College and Maine on Nov. 2.
