Lady Flames to Compete at ITA Atlantic Regional This Weekend
The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team continues its fall slate this weekend by travelling to Blacksburg, Va. to take part in the ITA Atlantic Regional. Play begins on Friday morning and will continue until Oct. 23rd at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
The Lady Flames have a total of 11 entries in the tournament, including four pairs in the main doubles draw, two entries in the main singles draw and five participants in the singles qualifying draw. The 11 entries are the most ever for a Liberty women's tennis team at the Atlantic Regional tournament.
Live stats for this weekend's games will be available on LibertyFlames.com by clicking the live stats link on the women's tennis schedule/results page. Live stats will be provided by the Virginia Tech athletics communications department.
"The girls have done a superb job of improving their games and level of competitiveness over the past few months and the results are showing with so many of our girls being invited to play in the regional tournament," commented Liberty head coach Jeff Maren. "The hard work is paying off, but the team is also aware that this is a long journey and so this event will give us yet another opportunity to move one step closer to our goal of capturing the conference title this spring."
On Friday morning, singles play begins with qualifying rounds. Rebekah Jenkins opens play for Liberty against Erin Snook of Navy at 8 a.m., followed by Nicola Wellman battling Temple's Maame Ama Osei at 9 a.m. At 9:30 a.m., Cameron Richard is scheduled to play Amanda Wickman of Pittsburgh, while Jessie Boda will go up against Saint Joseph's Kristina Eisenbrand at 10 a.m. Wrapping up play in the qualifying draw for the Lady Flames, will be Valerie Thong. She is matched up with Vivian Tsui of West Virginia at 10:30 a.m.
The main doubles draw will begin on Friday afternoon. Boda and Brittany Yang are set to play against Morgan State's Mi'Kola Cooper and Chelsi Russell, while Richard and Annisha Domenech are matched up with Sophie Panarese and Madeline Jaeger of Georgetown. Both matches are set to begin at 2 p.m. At 2:30 p.m., Alexandra Sheeran and Wellman will play West Virginia's Emily Mathis and Audrey Wooland. Jenkins and Thong wrap up the first round of doubles play at 4 p.m. against Old Dominion's Ivana Vukovic and Nika Khmolovska.
Yang and Sheeran will compete in the main singles draw later in the tournament for the Lady Flames.
"Personally, I hope to build from my matches from our last trip to Virginia Tech and continue to prove myself," stated Yang. "As for the team, it is an opportunity for us to overcome adversity and come out on top, showing everyone our strength and dedication to Liberty Tennis."
The Lady Flames will conclude their fall schedule at the Houston Invite in Houston, Texas. The tournament will be played Nov. 2 – Nov. 4.
