Liberty Softball Wraps Up Fall Season
The Liberty softball team recently concluded its fall season, posting a 3-3 record that included a sweep of Lynchburg College and a 1-3 showing at the Botetourt Military Appreciation Tournament.
The Lady Flames' offense was strong throughout the fall, as Liberty batted .330 as a team with 51 runs scored, good for an average of 8.5 runs per game. Liberty hit nine home runs and registered a .550 slugging percentage. Also showing speed on the base paths, the Lady Flames swiped 16 bases.
Eight Lady Flames hit .300 or better, led by Grace Nordan, who hit .647 with four doubles, four home runs and 10 RBIs. Blair Lawrence batted .409 with six runs scored and as many stolen bases. Kelby Allen hit .381 while registering 10 RBIs.
Liberty hosted Lynchburg College on Sept. 22, sweeping the Hornets, 10-0 and 19-9. Game one featured a combined three-hit shutout by Annah Jo Brittingham and Chandler Ball, while the Lady Flames hit five homers during game two.
The team then headed to Botetourt Sports Complex, where the Lady Flames competed in a Military Appreciation Tournament, Sept. 29-30.
Liberty opened the tournament with a narrow, 2-1, loss to Radford. The Lady Flames then downed James Madison, 9-1, getting two home runs from Nordan and a three-hit pitching performance by Brittingham.
The Lady Flames then fell, 13-5, to Virginia Tech and lost by a 10-7 score to Longwood on Sept. 30. Allen went 3-for-4 with four RBIs against the Lancers.
The 2013 softball season opens for Liberty on Feb. 16 against Tennessee Tech in Woodstock, Ga., as the Lady Flames compete in the Kennesaw State Classic.
