Liberty Posts Season-Opening 147-112 Win at Campbell
Liberty opened its third swimming campaign by defeating Campbell, 147-112, Saturday at Johnson Natatorium. The Lady Flames posted a pair of individual program records on the afternoon.
Liberty is now 1-0 on the season, while Campbell holds an 0-1 record in dual meets. All-time, Liberty holds a 3-2 dual-meet record against the Camels and is 2-1 in season openers.
During the meet, Liberty swept the top two scoring spots in both the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay. In total, the Lady Flames earned victory in nine out of 14 events contested.
Hannah Wakeley broke Liberty's program record in the 1,000 free, with a winning time of 10:34.02. She edged Campbell's Sarah Jabusch (10:34.94) for the victory. The Lady Flames' previous record in the 1,000 free was 10:36.29, set by Emily Duff on Jan. 28, 2012.
Emilie Kaufman swam the fastest time in the 100 breast as an exhibition swimmer. She clocked a program-record time of 1:03.24. The Liberty record was 1:07.09, set by Amber Kerico at the 2011 CCSA Championships. Kaufman later went on to win the 100 fly, clocking a 56.56, ahead of Jessica Reinhardt's second-place time of 57.92.
Brye Ravettine claimed victory in the 100 back, swimming 59.05, while Erin Curry placed third in 1:00.99. Ravettine finished third in the 50 free, as Liberty posted the four fastest times in that event, led by Marley Cripe (24.41) and Chloe Thomas (24.81).
Thomas added a 100 free victory after touching the wall in 53.39. Cori Gary followed in second place, at 54.10.
Liberty went 1-2 in the 200 back, as Kendall Hough won with a time of 2:09.30 and Erin Curry swam 2:09.49 for second.
Laura Day won the 200 breaststroke in 2:29.52 after finishing with the second-fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.61).
In the 200 free, Duff swam 1:57.37 to finish second, while Bethany Wakeley was third in 1:58.30.
Kylie Warne won three individual events for the Camels, including the 200 free (1:57.22), 200 butterfly (2:07.96) and the 200 individual medley (2:08.81).
Cheriesse Campbell gave the Camels their fourth event win of the day, out-touching Hannah Wakeley at the wall, 5:13.07 to 5:13.83.
Liberty's 200 medley relays claimed first and second in official scoring, clocking 1:46.90 and 1:48.26, respectively. The Lady Flames went 1-2 in the 200 free relay to end the meet, with one Liberty quartet swimming 1:37.80 and the next recording a time of 1:37.89.
Liberty will next compete in the Virginia Tech Sprint Classic on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Lady Flames will face the Hokies, along with CCSA foes Gardner-Webb and VMI.
