Lady Flames Head to South Carolina for Weekend Big South Matches

The Liberty volleyball team travels to South Carolina for the only time this season, taking on Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina on Friday and Saturday.

The Liberty volleyball team travels to South Carolina for the only time this season, facing Charleston Southern on Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on Coastal Carolina in its first-ever visit to The HTC Center at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Liberty's last trip to Charleston, in November 2011, resulted in the Lady Flames' sixth Big South title.

Liberty (14-6, 4-1 Big South) enters the weekend tied with Presbyterian College for first in the Big South. Charleston Southern (9-13, 3-2) defeated Coastal Carolina (5-10, 3-2), 3-2, last Friday at CSU Fieldhouse in each team's most recent conference match.

Liberty at a Glance
Liberty had an impressive showing this past weekend, sweeping both Campbell and High Point at home. The Lady Flames have now won 10 straight home matches, 17 straight conference home matches, and have won 14 consecutive sets at the Vines Center.

The Lady Flames averaged 2.33 aces per set and hit .280 over the weekend. Liberty leads the conference in both categories, and is eighth in the nation in service aces per set.

Sweeping the Competition
Liberty maintained a first-place tie in the Big South by sweeping Campbell and High Point on Friday and Saturday, respectively. All four of the Lady Flames' conference victories this season have been 3-0 sweeps.
On Friday, Liberty hit .312, compared to .106 for Campbell. Caroline Douglas led the Lady Flames with 16 kills at a .464 clip, while Gabrielle Shipe collected 20 digs.

The Lady Flames swept High Point on Saturday, in a match that featured two teams tied for the Big South lead. Loren Thomas paced the Lady Flames with 12 kills, while Jade Craycraft had 29 assists and 10 digs, good for her second double-double in a row.

Strong on Offense and Defense
During their two matches on the weekend, against Campbell and High Point, the Lady Flames outhit opponents, .280 to .142, picking it up on both offense and defense. Four Lady Flames (Douglas, Thomas, Happel and Craycraft) all averaged over 2.0 kills per set.

Moving on Up
Kendle Rollins entered Liberty's top 10 in career blocks with her 260th career block on Saturday, passing Janell Migeot (2002-05).

Loren Thomas is now tied with Cally Geiger (UNC Asheville, 1995-98) for 9th all-time in the Big South with 421 career blocks. Thomas is tied with current assistant coach Jennifer Vaden for the most solo blocks, 65, in a career during the rally-scoring era.

9 in a Row
Caroline Douglas posted 10 or more kills during nine straight matches, starting on Sept. 15 against Virginia Tech and lasting through Friday night's match against Campbell. During that span, Douglas averaged 4.18 kills per set.

Her streak of 10-kill matches was the longest by a Lady Flame since Karyl Bacon ended her career with 12 straight 10-kill contests, Oct. 16-Nov. 20, 2010.

Double-Double
Jade Craycraft posted double-doubles in back-to-back matches against Campbell and High Point. She had 30 assists and 11 digs versus Campbell, and then posted 29 assists, 10 digs, eight kills, four aces and five blocks against High Point.

Craycraft leads the Lady Flames with five double-doubles this season, and has 19 double-doubles for her career.

Aces All Around
Liberty has served up 129 aces so far this season after posting 146 aces during all of 2011. Four Lady Flames (Becca Haraf - 24, Jade Craycraft and Lillie Happel - 21, Gabrielle Shipe - 20) have recorded 20 or more aces apiece so far this year.

Leading the Pack
At present, the Lady Flames sit atop the Big South statistical charts in both hitting percentage (.249) and aces per set (1.70). Liberty's aces rank 8th in the latest NCAA Division I national statistics listings.

Caroline Douglas paces the Big South in kills per set (3.45) and is fourth in attack percentage (.301). Teammate Loren Thomas leads the league with a .332 hitting percentage, while Gabrielle Shipe is third with 3.82 digs per set.

Charleston Southern (9-13, 3-2 Big South) defeated Coastal Carolina, 3-2, last Friday, before going 1-1 in a pair of matches played on Tuesday. Meredith Parrott was named Big South Freshman of the Week on Monday. Kayla Klinger leads CSU with 2.67 kills per set, while Sydney Tracy paces the Big South with 0.43 aces per set. Wynter Davis leads the team in blocking (0.97 bps) and Ashley Higginbothem leads the squad in digs (3.56 dps).

First-year CSU head coach Al Givens picked up his 400th collegiate coaching victory last Friday against Coastal Carolina.

Liberty is 33-4 all-time against Charleston Southern, including 15-1 under Pinder. The Lady Flames have won each of the last 10 matches between the teams, with Charleston Southern's last win over Liberty coming Oct. 21, 2006 in Charleston. Liberty's last three meetings with CSU away from Lynchburg have resulted in 3-2 Lady Flames victories.

Last season, Liberty swept Charleston Southern, 3-0, on Oct. 15. The Lady Flames held off the Buccaneers, 25-22, in set one before leading sets two and three from start to finish. Liberty held CSU to a .073 attack percentage, posting nine team blocks.

Coastal Carolina (5-10, 3-2) has played a full five sets during each of its five conference matches so far this season, and is 4-5 in five-set matches overall in 2012. The Chanticleers held the Big South lead before losing at CSU last Friday. Freshman Gabriella Horvath ranks sixth in the Big South with 2.70 kills per set, while Kindra Bailey ranks third with 1.06 blocks per set. Sam Skryd averages 0.32 aces per set, good for sixth place in league standings. Lauren Alejo paces the team with 7.82 assists on average.

Jozsef Forman is in his first season at Coastal Carolina, and is 63-49 as a collegiate head coach. Forman spent three years (2007-09) as head coach at New Orleans.

Liberty holds a 30-17 record in the all-time series against Coastal Carolina. The Lady Flames have won each of the last three meetings, and have posted 11 straight regular-season wins over the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina's most recent win over Liberty came Nov. 21, 2009, in the Big South Volleyball Championship title match.

Last season, Liberty beat Coastal Carolina, 3-1, on Oct. 14 at the Vines Center. The Lady Flames recorded 10 blocks, holding the Chanticleers to a .109 attack percentage.

Palmetto State Success
Liberty went 5-0 in matches played in South Carolina last season, and is 22-10 inside the Palmetto State under Coach Pinder. The Lady Flames captured their conference-record sixth Big South Volleyball Championship at the CSU Fieldhouse last season. The team is 19-4 in South Carolina since the start of the 2007 season.

The Lady Flames have posted a 50-19 (.725) record against South Carolina teams under Pinder, including 15-1 against CSU and 13-6 versus Coastal Carolina.
