Liberty Races to 3-0 Win Over High Point
In a match between two teams that entered Saturday in a tie for the Big South lead, Liberty swept visiting High Point, 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-17) at the Vines Center.
Liberty is now 14-6, including 4-1 in conference play following its win over High Point. The Lady Flames have won 17 straight home conference matches, and 10 home matches in a row overall. High Point falls to 14-7, 3-2 in Big South matches after splitting this weekend's matches.
Liberty hit .254 in recording 41 kills, while High Point registered 38 kills at a .175 pace. The Lady Flames outblocked the Panthers, 9-4, and served up seven aces to zero for High Point. The Panthers held a 56-42 advantage in digs.
For the match, Loren Thomas paced the Lady Flames with 12 kills and added five blocks. Jade Craycraft posted her second double-double in a row, with 29 assists and 10 digs, along with eight kills, four aces and five blocks.
Lillie Happel had nine kills in addition to 10 digs, while Caroline Douglas posted eight kills and Gabrielle Shipe collected nine digs. Kendle Rollins tallied two blocks, giving her 260 career blocks and moving her into 10th place on Liberty's career blocks list.
Courtney Johnk sent down a match-high 13 kills for High Point. Annemarie Chin recorded a match-high 13 digs, and Maddie Simpson dished out 25 assists for the visitors.
The Lady Flames quickly took control of set one, as a Happel kill made the score 18-13 in Liberty's favor. High Point fought back to within one, 20-19, after Chelsea Davis recorded her fifth kill of the set. Liberty pulled away to win the opening set, 25-22, with Thomas registering the final two points.
High Point hit .306 in tallying 17 kills during set one, while Liberty hit .300 with 15 kills. Johnk hit 6-for-7 in the first set, while Happel and Thomas both had four kills for the Lady Flames.
Liberty stormed out to a big lead in the middle stanza, and closed the set with a 7-1 rally on the way to a 25-14 victory. The Lady Flames served up three aces in set two, and held the Panthers to a .033 hitting percentage. Thomas and High Point's Johnk registered four kills apiece during the second frame.
The hosts led the third set from start to finish, winning 25-17. The Lady Flames outscored High Point, 8-2, over the final 10 serves to seal the match sweep. Liberty posted four blocks during set thee, with Thomas assisting on all four rejections and Craycraft assisting on three. Thomas added four kills in set three, while Heldt tallied five set-three winners.
The Lady Flames next take a weekend trip to South Carolina to compete in two Big South Conference away matches. Liberty meets Charleston Southern on Friday at 7 p.m. before an 11:30 a.m. match at Coastal Carolina, Saturday.
