2013 Liberty Softball Schedule
Liberty's 2013 softball schedule, released today by 20th-year head coach Paul Wetmore, will provide the Lady Flames with several opportunities to face top competition.
The Lady Flames will compete in a total of 55 games, including 22 out of the first 24 contests away from Lynchburg and the final seven games at home. The slate is highlighted by nine games against teams that advanced to the 2012 NCAA Division I Softball Championship. Liberty will face 2012 Women's College World Series Participant USF in Clearwater, Fla. on March 15.
Liberty opens the 2013 season at the Kennesaw State Classic in Woodstock, Ga., Feb. 16-17. The Lady Flames take on three Ohio Valley Conference opponents on the weekend, starting with Tennessee Tech, and finish the tournament against IUPUI of the Summit League.
A trip to Greenville, N.C., Feb. 22-24, will see the Lady Flames face a pair of NCAA Tournament participants and 40-win teams from 2012, in Lehigh and Notre Dame. Liberty meets the host Pirates, a perennial Conference USA power, in the tournament finale.
The Lady Flames face Hampton in the home opener, Feb. 26 at Liberty Softball Field, marking the earliest home date in program history. The next day, the team travels to Johnson City, Tenn., to face East Tennessee State.
Spring break begins with a four-game stay in Durham, N.C., March 9-10, as Liberty meets N.C. Central and UNC Wilmington.
The Lady Flames then travel to Florida for six contests, beginning on March 13 at 2012 NCAA Tournament participant UCF. Liberty competes in the USF Spring Invitational from March 15-17, and will face the host Bulls, who finished the 2012 season ranked No. 8 after making the Women's College World Series.
Liberty opens the 24-game Big South Conference schedule with a road game at Radford, March 20. The team then hosts Presbyterian College March 22-23 and follows with a conference series at Campbell the following weekend.
April begins for the Lady Flames with a home doubleheader with Radford before a road series at Charleston Southern, April 5-6. On April 8, the Lady Flames travel to Farmville to take on Longwood, the newest member of the Big South.
Following a double-header at UNCG on April 10, the Lady Flames host Gardner-Webb April 12-13 before playing a home twinbill against Longwood, April 15.
The Lady Flames meet James Madison in Harrisonburg on April 17 to start Liberty's final road trip, which also includes three games at Winthrop. Liberty will get to preview the Big South tournament site on April 19-20 in Rock Hill, S.C.
A doubleheader against Virginia of the ACC opens Liberty's season-ending seven-game homestand. The Lady Flames then host 2012 Big South champion Coastal Carolina April 26-27 to wrap up conference play, and will play their final regular-season game on April 30 against NCAA Tournament participant Virginia Tech.
Liberty will compete in the 2013 Big South Softball Championship, hosted by Winthrop, from May 9-12. The Lady Flames will look for a similar result to when the tournament was last held in Rock Hill, where the team won the 2011 Big South Softball Championship.
The Big South champion will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Softball Championship, which will begin the weekend of May 16.
