Lady Flames Release Spring Schedule
Liberty first-year women's tennis head coach Jeff Maren has announced the Lady Flames' 2013 spring slate. Non-conference matchups with in-state foes, Virginia Tech and Richmond, as well as an always-challenging Big South lineup await the Lady Flames in 2013.
Liberty will take to the road 12 times, with seven of those matches coming against non-conference opponents and five tilts with Big South schools. The Lady Flames' home lineup will include five out-of-conference matchups and four conference dates.
"Opening the spring schedule with the tournament in Florida will help to prepare us for a tough stretch of dual matches in February," commented Maren. "Also, travelling to Tennessee and Kentucky during spring break will give us the opportunity to play some teams that we haven't seen before. Our conference matches will be challenging, but I believe that the schedule that we have in place will help us to peak for these matches, and most importantly, the conference tournament."
Liberty will open the season in Fort Myers, Fla. at the Florida Gulf Coast University Invite, which takes place on Jan. 19-21.
The Lady Flames begin the month of February with a matchup against Appalachian State on Sunday, Feb. 3. The contest will take place at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
On Feb. 9, Liberty will welcome Charlotte to Lynchburg for its home opener. The following day, the Lady Flames head to Blacksburg, Va. for a match against the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Hokies finished last season ranked No. 5 in the ITA's Atlantic Regional.
Liberty will play three straight home meets beginning on Feb. 12 against East Tennessee State, followed by its Big South opener against Longwood (Feb. 20). The three-match home stand concludes with a contest versus Morgan State on Feb. 22.
Next, the Lady Flames will take to the road for five straight matches. The five-match stretch begins with three consecutive Big South matchups, Campbell (Feb. 28), Coastal Carolina (March 2) and UNC Asheville (March 7). Meets against Lipscomb (March 9) and Western Kentucky (March 11) will wrap up Liberty's longest stretch away from Liberty Mountain.
The Lady Flames then return to the Hill City for a March 19 tilt against East Carolina.
Liberty will play back-to-back away meets against Winthrop (March 22) and Gardner-Webb (March 23), before finishing out the month of March with two home matchups against Radford (March 27) and Presbyterian (March 28).
Next, the Lady Flames take a mid-week trip to Harrisonburg, Va. for a contest with James Madison on April 2.
Liberty's final two home meets of the season will take place on April 5 against Charleston Southern and on April 6 against Marshall. Marshall concluded the 2012 season with a No. 4 ranking in the ITA's Atlantic Regional.
The Lady Flames' regular-season schedule wraps up with a meet against the Richmond Spiders on April 9.
The Big South Championship, which will be held in Rock Hill, S.C., will take place from April 18-20.
Liberty returns a core group of players who contributed 85 percent of last season's singles victories. Brittany Yang, who led the team with 11 singles victories, returns along with Cameron Richard and Rebekah Jenkins, who recorded 10 and nine victories respectively.
The Lady Flames continue their fall schedule at the Atlantic Regionals, which will run from Oct. 19-23 in Blacksburg, Va.
