Ngetich Kipchirchir was named Big South Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week after finishing fifth at Saturday's Winthrop/Adidas Invitational.

For the second time in as many days, a Liberty cross country runner has earned a conference weekly honor. This time, redshirt freshman Ngetich Kipchirchir has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week.

Kipchirchir's first career Big South weekly honor comes on the heels of Jennifer Klugh's ECAC Division I Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week award from Tuesday.

A native of Eldoret, Kenya, Kipchirchir made an impressive collegiate cross country 8K debut at Saturday's Winthrop/Adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. He covered the course in a time of 24:46.84, placing fifth out of 221 runners and first among all Big South entrants. It was the fastest time by a Liberty men's freshman making his cross country 8K debut since Josh McDougal clocked a time of 24:41.7 at the 2004 Lou Onesty Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.

Kipchirchir was one of three Liberty freshmen to finish inside the top 13 on Saturday, helping the Flames place third overall and first among Big South teams. As a result, Liberty cracked the Southeast Region rankings for the first time this season, checking in at No. 13 this week.

After taking this weekend off from competition, the Liberty men's and women's cross country squads will travel to Notre Dame, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 28.
