Liberty Finished Inverness Intercollegiate in Fifth Place
The Flames were one of the few teams who survived blustery winds on Tuesday and move up the leaderboard at the 2012 Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational. However, Liberty was only able to better its team position by one spot, finishing in fifth place.
The Flames circled the famed Inverness Club for a final time three shots better than the field average on Tuesday and finished the two-day event with a 31-over par 883 (294-289-300).
Northwestern was one of three teams to better the Flames' score during the closing round, allowing the Wildcats to finish atop the 10-team field and claim the team title. Northwestern carded an 11-over par 295 on the Tuesday, more than tripling its scores from the first two rounds en route to a final score 16-over par 868 (285-288-295).
Florida State (289-289-301), Kent State (289-292-298) and North Texas (284-284-311) each finished four shots ahead of the Flames with a 27-over par 879 to share second place.
None of the 63 players in the tournament field finished below par, marking the second-straight tournament Liberty has played in without a single golfer finishing in red figures.
Kent State's Kevin Miller (66-75-74) and Northwestern's Jack Perry (70-72-73) finished 54 holes of action tied for first place with a two-over par 215 and were declared co-medalists.
Liberty's Niklas Lindstrom was one of eight players to finish one shot off the pace and finished the tournament tied for third place.
Lindstrom fired the second best individual round on Tuesday, carding his third-consecutive one-over par 72. The consistent score helped him record his second career Top 5 finish with a three-over par 216 (72-72-72).
Chase Marinell matched his opening round score on the par-71, 7,255-yard course with a three-over par 74 on Tuesday. Marinell finished the event tied for 13th place with a six-over par 219 (74-71-74) after carding six bogeys and three birdies on Tuesday.
Mathieu Fenasse finished two shots behind Marinell and shared 17th place with two other golfers with an eight-over par 221 (73-71-77). The sophomore was only able to birdie one hole on Tuesday, the par-4, No. 16, while carding five bogeys and one double bogey.
Max McKay was one of two Liberty golfers on the day to go without an under-par hole and finished the event tied for 42nd place with a 15-over par 228 (76-75-77). McKay had four bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4, No. 15 hole.
Harrison Winger completed his first collegiate tournament at Liberty in 46th place with a 17-over par 230 (75-76-79). The rookie had four bogeys on Tuesday to go along with two double bogeys.
The Flames had one remaining golfer in the field. Senior Andrew Colvin competed as an individual and finished tied for 33rd with a 12-over par 225 (76-72-77).
Liberty will play the third tournament in its four-event fall schedule on Oct. 1-2 when the Flames travel to Daufuskie Island, S.C., for the Rees Jones Intercollegiate. Liberty has played in the Michigan State hosted event for the last two years, spotlighted by a tie for first in 2010.
