Liberty Men's XC Enters Regional Rankings
After a strong performance at Saturday's Winthrop/Adidas Invitational, the Liberty men's cross country team has entered the Southeast Region rankings for the first time this season, at No. 13. Additionally, the Lady Flames check in at No. 15 in the regional listing, as announced today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Liberty is the only Big South team to appear in either the men's or women's regional polls this week. N.C. State tops the men's ranking for the Southeast Region, while Virginia remains at No. 1 on the women's side.
Despite running without veteran standouts Caleb Edmonds, Zac Edwards and David Ricksecker, a young Liberty men's squad finished third at Saturday's Winthrop/Adidas Invitational, including first among Big South entrants. The Flames' top three finishers were all freshmen, as Ngetich Kipchirchir placed fifth, Jeremie Bourget was ninth and Will Templeton took 13th place.
Meanwhile, the Lady Flames' top seven runners all finished inside the top 30 and broke 19:00 for the 5K course at Winthrop. As a result, Liberty placed as the top Big South team at the meet and second overall. Jennifer Klugh (sixth place) and Khristina Kanagy (seventh) were the Lady Flames' top individual finishers on the day.
Liberty's next race will be the Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 28. The meet will begin at 2 p.m. at the Notre Dame Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind.
