Liberty to Square Off with Howard
The Liberty Flames men's soccer team travels to Washington, D.C., for a match at Howard, Wednesday evening. The nonconference match at Green Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
A Look at Liberty
The Liberty Flames will enter Wednesday evening's contest looking to halt a two-game losing streak. The Flames dropped both of it matches this past weekend at the Sculley Memorial Tournament in Lexington, Va., falling to Marshall and George Washington by identical 2-0 scores.
Midfielder Juan Niño and defenders Sam Duininck and Greg White have each scored a goal for the Flames this season.
Goalkeepers Sam Chappell and Scott Sutarik have split playing time between the posts for Liberty this season. Each keeper has started two games this year, playing the full 90 minutes in each. Chapell has posted a 2.00 goals-against average, while Sutarik has recorded a 1.00 goals-against average and one shutout.
Head Coach Jeff Alder has led the Flames to a 109-82-19 record during his 12 seasons, capturing his 100th victory in a 2-0 win at No. 10 Virginia last season. Alder's Flames posted an 11-6-3 record in 2011, en route to their second conference crown and fifth consecutive season with a double-digit win total.
All-Time Against Howard
Wednesday evening will be the 11th meeting between the Flames and the Bison on the soccer pitch. Howard leads the all-time series, 6-4. However, Liberty has won four straight meetings between the two teams since 2008.
The last year, the Flames shut out the Bison, 4-0, at Osborne Stadium on Sept. 16.
A Look at Howard
After a 1-0 loss to Towson this past Friday, the Howard Bison, 0-6, will host their first home game of the year, Wednesday.
Frederick Todd III and Donny-Joshua Felix have each scored a goal for the Bison this season.
Goalkeeper Eric Hamilton has started four games for Howard, posting a 2.49 goals-against average.
Head coach Michael Lawrence is in his sixth year as head of the Howard Bison. His has led his alma mater, Howard, to a 10-58-13 record.
Sculley All-Tournament Team
Liberty midfielder Johnny Torres and defenders Uriah Bentick and Greg White were selected to the Jay Sculley All-Tournament team this past weekend. Bentick's selection was his second at the tournament. In 2010, he was also named to the Sculley All-Tournament team.
Road Swing Comes to End
Wednesday evening, the Flames will conclude a four-game road swing, their longest of the year. Currently, Liberty is 1-2 during the span. The Flames opened Big South play with a victory at Longwood on Sept. 1 to start the string of games away from Lynchburg.
Liberty returns home for a Big South Conference match against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Sept. 19. The contest is scheduled to be played on the East Campus Fields. Match time is 4 p.m.
